I've heard Frank Wilson would be the interim. If there is an interim and this isn't a deal where Kelly finishes the season before he's gone, it will be Wilson.

No idea who they'd look at as the next head coach, but it'll definitely be somebody younger and LSU will never put itself on the hook for some 10 year deal again. That I know - the powers that be are adamant about it. The job is VERY marketable right now, but we aren't going to go with a "big-name" Scott Woodward hire. I'm told we want to find somebody energetic and on the way up.

So no Lane Kiffin?

I’m fine with that, and totally agree with the thinking. Even if it means no Kiffin.

Lane is 3-15 vs Top 25 teams. He didn’t make it to the Top 12 last year with a super loaded team with a 1st round QB. Dude is guaranteed to make 13.5 million minimum next year, whether it’s Florida, Ole Miss or wherever. frick all that shite.

Florida or Ole Miss can have Lane, they’re desperate for relevance, so it works. They can haggle over making a merely good/entertaining coach the undeserved highest-paid coach in the country.

I think LSU should look for the next Saban/Smart. And I don’t anyone thinks Kiffin is that.

Saban wasn’t Saban until he got the LSU job. He was 48 years old (Kiffin is 50) He had a record of 34-24-1 overall and 23-16-1 in Big Ten games at Michigan State. He had a 10-2 record in his final season, but went 0-3 in bowl games during his tenure.

When hired, Saban had 7 seasons as a head coach at only 2 stops, with Michigan St being the best program he had access to. He was also never fired. Kiffin has had 16 head coaching seasons, including opportunities at USC, an NFL team, and 2 SEC schools, and has been fired twice. The hires would not at all be comparable.

It's funny because it's like we are totally flip-flopping our positions. Last time. They went for the young cheap option that could be fired and we went for the more established, but flawed, expensive option.

Kiffin is like a poor man's 2018 Jimbo Fisher. Sexton is going to make somebody spend a lot of money for diminishing results.

I don't know if I would say FL went cheap. Maybe cheaper, but definitely not cheap. They were paying him $7.4 MM a year and the fourth highest buyout in history of college football this year behind Jimbo, Kelly and Franklin.

quote:

Billy Napier more than tripled his salary with his new job at Florida, which makes him one of the highest paid coaches in the Southeastern Conference. UF signed Napier to a seven-year, $51.8M contract that will pay him $7.1M in 2022 and increase his salary by $100K each year.

Only Alabama’s Nick Saban ($9.75 million), Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher ($9 million), new LSU coach Brian Kelly ($8.6 million) and Georgia’s Kirby Smart ($7.13 million) are due to make more in the SEC next season.
