LSU wouldn’t have hired Cignetti or Lanning. If they had fans would have melted.

Maybe it’s time to stop the same way of thinking and just hire a goddamn good coach, no matter where they are found.
Maybe if Georgia or Oregon can do it, so can LSU.

There were a lot of fans who melted when we hired Saban. The prevailing thought was “wait, the guy we beat in the Independent Bowl?!?”

The fact that 80% of this board is throwing around Lanning as their number one target says all you need to know about the level of delusion on here.
Might as well say Andy Reid or Kyle Shanahan is your number one option.

Dan Lanning is Target 1. Justifiably target 1.

But it’s already been decided that he’d never leave because “why would he leave?” Offer him anyway. Maybe he wants to be back in the SEC. Maybe he hates the weather in Oregon. Who knows why men leave great jobs for different jobs. But if history has taught us anything, is that they do anyway.

Why? For going 0-3 against Kalen DeBoer and getting demolished in his lone CFP appearance?
Pretty much every coach Oregon has hired over the last 30 years has been successful.

This is the level of retardation we are dealing with

It’s hard to predict what young coach will turn out great. For every Lanning there are two Charlie Strongs.

We hired a more successful Cignetti and look how that turned out.
Hiring coaches is a crapshoot, because there are so many variables.
Geography, support, recruiting base, etc, and that’s before you get to the human aspect.

Cignetti
Indiana played 2 ranked teams last year and lost both games by double digits. Their best win last year was 8-5 Michigan. Their second-best win was either 7-6 Nebraska or 6-7 Washington.
They’ve only played one game this year against a team that’s currently ranked. And their remaining opponents are a combined 1-17 in Big 10 play, so they won’t see another one until the B1G Championship.
I get that they blew out Illinois and beat Oregon. I get that Indiana was bad before Cignetti got there, and his record (against amazingly bad competition considering they play in a P4 conference) has been stellar. But I’m a little surprised how everyone seems ready to crown him the next Nick Saban after one win against a ranked team.
Maybe it turns out to be true, but his extension could just as easily turn into an albatross for Indiana.
