I mean Franklin and Kelly are the two main ones driving this and both have mitigation clauses that will bring their buy outs down

We don’t know Kelly’s official buyout yet. There could still be a dead hooker stuffed in a closet or buried in his back yard.
Due diligence before a number is official.

That kind of money could buy you something really worthwhile like 4 years of Brandon Ingram.

Those guys do have the most obscene number, but at least the ADs had some reason to give them that.
Franklin had good success at Penn State and received some legit interest from USC and other big programs. LSU had to pay a lot to get Kelly from another major program.
The ones that stick out to me are Napier, Pittman, Foster. Did Florida really need to give Napier that to get him from the Sun Belt? Arkansas and UCLA could’ve had Pittman and Foster on $0 buyouts, and they would’ve stuck around.

Buyouts are cheaper than bad football

You could buy a really nice bass boat with that kind of money.

I’d like to say these numbers will come down or that they’ll start working performance clauses into them, but that would require the schools to have leverage and nearly every school would have to agree to structure contracts like that.

It's just monopoly money to schools. Prints itself.

Look at A&M. You hire a good coach and these numbers quickly become irrelevant.
Hanging onto a bad coach is way more costly and destructive
The real problem now is that the available market is saturated and there’s not that many proven coaches available

University Presidents and ADs have zero backbone, so they agree to these obscene buyout numbers. I'm sure there's pressure from the boosters to "go get that guy, or else".

A&M now has the play to contract extension game of chicken with Elko.
They could very easily end up in a bad contract with Elko after 1.5 seasons of Marcel Reed.
