Of course he’s probably in line for an NFL head coaching job. He fits perfectly the Sean McVay-Kevin O’Connell template—an extremely young (only 37) successful coordinator who NFL teams firing their coaches on Black Monday will slaver over, thinking they have the next McVay.

I think Sheppard would be a somewhat realistic candidate if you are going for a young unknown quantity, but no, I really don’t see him leaving the NFL.

But hey, maybe like Clark Lea, the pull of being Head Coach at his alma mater would be attractive.

McVay and Kevin O’Connel are both elite QB coaches, Shep isn’t. I’m not saying he’s a bad candidate, but comparing him to Sean or Kevin is apples to oranges.

Aren't they both offensive minded coaches with experience developing QBs? Sheppard is a former LB. No thanks. He is probably more Mayo/Pierce than Mcvay/O’Connell.

We aren’t going to find a coach like Sean McVay. McVay is one of the top 5 or so coaches at any level of football. Old school mentality, elite offensive mind, obsessive worker.

LSU guy, you can see his players play hard for him, good motivator, successfully risen to the challenge of D coordinator with his first opportunity, BUT no head coaching experience yet. I don’t think he’s that far out from a head coaching gig but maybe not just yet.

Let it marinate some. Tiger who played on one of the best teams in school history, fast riser in nfl doing great things as lions DC, has been working with Dan Campbell and learning how to build a rock solid culture with highly paid athletes

College football is changing so fast that “proven winner” doesn’t mean anything anymore. Who are the next gen guys who can do it? It’s going to take an out of the box move. Give him 4 years 7mm and make it extremely incentive based

In today's environment we should talk to him at a minimum. How many big time hires fall flat?Seems like most if the expectation is championships.

I could get on board a highly incentivized short term contract.

I don’t hate the idea. He’s a very successful NFL coordinator and is young and probably wants to prove himself.

I think he has been on an LSU staff in a small capacity before.

A young NFL guy might be better suited to navigate today’s recruiting and NIL environment

BUT….

Not much experience and he’s probably going to be looked at as an NFL coach before long. Not sure if he’s really interested in college coaching.

He’d have to hit a home run with his OC.

It would be a mistake to ONLY consider someone with HC experience.

Kirby was never a HC before Georgia hired him.

I know it’s easy to dump on Dabo but he was never a HC either and has 2 tittles

Lannjng was never a HC either I believe

I know no HC experience but his name comes to mind because this board has been filled with what I think may be a plausible mindset: that after these ridiculous contracts and paying Kelly’s buyout that we need to go a different direction with an up and coming coordinator on an incentive-laden contract. I don’t think you’ll find a better fit than Sheppard, college or pro.

And yes guys, I know KS is a defensive coordinator. I mentioned he fit the McVay etc template as a young and upcoming coordinator. NFL coordinators’ salaries are not publicized but I’ll estimate he makes around 2M a year. Offer him a 5 year 6M contract loaded with incentives. I think you at least have to talk to him.

But this is likely all a moot point. I think KS will be an NFL head coach by January 2026.
