They didn't gain their independence from the Ottomans until 1923.
We all know about the Armenian genocide but there were thousands of Greeks killed as well.
That culture doesn't forget.
However, they have some major cultural issues mostly stemming from a hard lean left economically and a generally lazy and undereducated workforce. Without tourism, the country would be borderline 3rd world.
They are going to need their own trump but they don't have the money to put up a long term fight against the boats landing in the islands.
