The mayor of a picturesque city has warned homeowners they could soon lose their properties after a Canadian court ruled the land belongs to a native tribe.

The British Columbia Supreme Court awarded the Cowichan Tribes an Aboriginal title over roughly 800 acres of land in the city of Richmond, a suburb of Vancouver.

The tribe was also given an Aboriginal right to fish for food, according to the court's August 2025 ruling which was reviewed by the Daily Mail.

The ruling further declared that private ownership by the federal government and city of Richmond would be 'defective and invalid.'

The declaration was suspended for 18 months so that the tribe, federal government and city would have the 'opportunity to make the necessary arrangements.'

But Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie has now penned a letter warning residents that the ruling 'could negatively affect title' of their homes and 'compromise the status and validity of your ownership.'

He urged residents to attend an upcoming information session being held by the city where they can learn more about this 'important situation,' according to the letter obtained by the Daily Mail.

The Cowichan Tribe has also filed an appeal claiming ownership of further land in the region, Brodie's letter revealed.

[quote]The so-called Lands of Tl'uqtinus is currently home to private residents, small farms, a golf course and several industrial operations.

quote:

The tribe wanted to have ownership of the land returned to them, but did not seek that titles of privately held properties be declared invalid.

The court, however, ruled that granting private property ownership rights would 'unjustifiably infringe' on Cowichan Aboriginal title, the August 2025 decision stated.

The court further ruled that issues surrounding titles would need to be resolved through negotiation, litigation or purchase, otherwise the properties would remain under Cowichan title lands.

Reminder:

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, native Americans had no concept of land ownership or private property, which is a Greco-Roman creation.

If you were to go to North America in, say, 1256 AD and ask a Native American tribe currently residing by the Hudson River if they “own” the land, they would have no clue what you are talking about. They would say “well, we are on this land now, and because we like it, we would defend it if another tribe tries to take it, but that tribe would be within their rights to fight us for it”

The current thinking is quite interesting and hypocritical:

Bad: Migration and replacement/conquering from 15th to 19th centuries.

Good: Migration and replacement/conquering from late-20th century to present.

They were nomadic savages before the Europeans conquered them. All of this virtue signaling stems from utter ignorance, as usual.

It's only bad when you (WASP) do it.

This is all correct, in addition to the fact that many murdered each other in tribal wars to take the land, as well as intra-tribal leadership conflicts. If I lived in BC, I'd immediately find another tribe that possessed the land in question a century prior and sponsor them to take it from the current tribe.

Regina v Ojibway. Canadian appellate court. A horse is a horse of course of course…unless it is a bird.

I only hope it's a bunch of wacky, judgmental, Canadian liberals that lose their home.

Given the insane property/housing prices and crisis in Canada, 800 acres near Vancouver is a shite ton of private money at stake.

Are the new "owners" going to reimburse the previous owners for the last few hundred years of property taxes?

If the Indians owned the land and therefore they owed no property taxes, when can the current owners expect reimbursement for the taxes forced on them by the Feds with no jurisdiction?

Ben and Jerry's headquarters too. And that land isn't just indigenous land but if you follow the paper trail it really was stolen.
