It’s amazing how few good movies really come out these days

My brother and I were discussing all the great comedies (just comedies!) that came out in the 2000s. Felt like I went to the movies 10+ times a year and there were still plenty of movies we didn’t see in theaters but watched on tv/blockbuster.
I feel like now we’re barely lucky if we get a handful of good movies of any genre in a given year and the odds of seeing it in a theater are slim. Even blockbuster movies like marvel or other franchises seem to be faltering, at least in my house. Saw the entire infinity saga in theaters basically but haven’t seen a marvel movie in years outside of Spiderman and Deadpool.
My wife and I have seen a few movies in theaters but they’ve all been re-releases of movies we love that have come back to our local theaters.
Insane how creatively bankrupt Hollywood is right now.

Imagine all the really good ideas that are getting passed over in favor of more retread slop.

There's still good movies being made. This year I've enjoyed F1, Warfare, Sinners, One Battle After Another, friendship, just to name a few. I think Nostalgia is a big reason why you feel like this, but there's always been crap being released. Tell me about these past years that had nothing but bangers lol.
I do agree that comedy is basically dead, and that's really sad.

When half the country can't define what a woman is it kinda takes the wind out of comedic sails.
People get offended too easily now.

Comedy is absolutely not even close to what it once was. Not even a nostalgia thing.
I'm sorry, but I agree with the OP. I don't think there are many great movies per year these days.
Sinners was horrendous towards the end. I don't care to ever watch One Battle After Another again. It kept my attention, but I find it be incredibly overrated.
So many new movies follow the same forced type of characters too and it feels forced.

Hollywood died after Harvey Weinstein was publicly sacrificed.

Talent has been diluted across so many different platforms.
30 years ago theatrical release was largely the only game in town for on screen story telling and the most prestigious. It concentrated the talent on studio sets.

That's fine, but even if Hollywood was making great films, no one would be showing up to watch them. Let's be honest about things. There's a reason Hollywood sticks to comic book movies, dinosaur, and animated films because that's what the general audience shows up for.

Movies have to be spectacles now to get folks to venture into the theaters. That’s why you are seeing the tent pole movies with 100+ million dollar budgets. Instead of 20 5 million dollar movies with interesting ideas, you get 1 100+ million dollar lowest common denominator movie. Blame streaming, blame marketing, blame Hollywood for not taking chances, the list goes on, but the old model is dying and will be replaced by some sort of YouTube style free with ads setup.

Oh I dont know, Superman 178 looks ok as does Spiderman With X Men.
Comic book movies and the nerds that patronize them are largely to blame. They took the risk out of investing in a movie, no Wolverine 235 wont be a blockbuster but it will make money.

Well, qualify that a bit. Comedy is as good as ever, it's just Netflix specials, live shows like Jimmy Carr, and podcasts (Kill Tony with the Estonian assassin, etc.) Now, comedic movies that are boundary pushing (as all comedy should be) maybe don't get greenlit by big studios at the same rate. But Deadpool keeps going strong, and it's hilarious.
What I've found is that you figure out the actors and actresses that get cast in movies you like, and just watch whatever they're in. It seems fairly reliable. Nobody is casting Danny McBride, Isla Fisher, etc., in something that isn't funny.

it's not going to change any time soon (from Hollywood or the BBC) until they remove those authoritarian DEI rules.

Movie budgets make comedies hard to justify.
The Naked Gun came out and seemed to be very well liked and avoided any politics in their humor… but still failed to make back its budget.
Comedies also are hard to make work in other markets because humor is way more subjective than action. Regardless of which side you take in American politics, any movie making fun of one side or the other is going to tank in China and Japan, not to mention alienate possibly half of your audience.
If a movie can be made cheaply enough that pure domestic gross without expecting an insane turnout is sufficient, then comedies will come back.
The death of the movie rental industry also killed a lot of innovation. Gone are the days that a movie could bomb at the box office and still make a profit from video rentals.

Did everyone forget about Happy Gilmore 2 already? It was massive hit for Netflix just a few months ago. Scary Movie 6 with the Wayans coming back is in the works as well.

If you want to drive changes, keep an eye out for the limited releases of independent films.
“Primitive War” was an excellent film with a small release, and the horror movie “Good Boy” was quite well done and a good watch.
Or maybe the anniversary releases of old movies that get limited runs back in theaters.

It came and went. “Massive hit” really means “massive get” but no, it was not a hit, it barely made a dent.

Exactly...and it was shite, like the majority of Netflix films. It's what studios are competing against. We can get 10 great films in theaters and 9 of them would bomb because most people just don't go to the movies anymore.
