NRC Event Log for today - second event down

quote:

TRANSPORT OF CONTAMINATED PERSON OFFSITE

The following information was provided by the licensee via phone and email:

"On 10/21/2025 at 0930 EDT an individual fell into the reactor cavity. The reactor cavity is full of water. They ingested some amount of cavity water. The individual was decontaminated by radiation protection personnel but had 300 counts per minute detected in their hair. At 1632 EDT they were sent off site to seek medical attention.

"This is an eight-hour notification, non-emergency, for the transportation of a contaminated person offsite. This event is reportable in accordance with 10 CFR 50.72(b)(3)(xii).

"The NRC Resident Inspector has been notified."

What an a-hole.

Look I'm not some safety superstar and by most modern standards I'm borderline reckless but even I'd put a belt on and tie off when I was working over the fricking reactor with the lid open.

One point - he fell in at 9:30 am and drank some of the water and they brought him to get checked out at 4:30 pm after they found his hair was setting off the geiger counter...?

Another point - if this dickhead makes it, he will have all of us topped when it comes to the best beer joint tale of getting hurt at work.

In January 1961, the U.S. Army suffered its only nuclear accident and the only fatal nuclear accident in the United States. The accident was caused by the manual removal of a control rod in a nuclear reactor in Idaho. The resulting explosion killed two Army specialists and a Navy Electrician’s Mate. One of the Army specialists, Richard McKinley, was so irradiated that his body had to be interred in a lead-lined casket, covered in cement, and placed in a metal vault before burial.

The special grave is now at Arlington National Cemetery, where it is under special watch, unable to be moved without permission from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

It’s not for everyone, but I love it. Been on nights since Aug, with a few more weeks to go.

Oh, I didn't mind it so much when I was on them, long ago now...

But it was not good for my first marriage.

Now? Curled up in bed every night with someone I love is the best part of my day. Wouldn't trade it

That plant has been shutdown since 2022. I don’t think 300 cpm is a lot. The chemicals in the water might be worse than the radiation.
