It's the perfect time to phase out SNAP.

Go back to handing out commodities. Beans, rice, flour, sugar, powdered milk, canned veggies and fruit, along with that old fashioned gubmint cheese.
No one will starve.
No one will starve.

Ngl, I'd love that product list way better than Lil Debbie's every day.

But but but, I'd have to stand in line.

I've been advocating for this for over a decade - bring a truck filled with absolute necessities to a parking lot once a month - must be able to squeeze thru a skinny opening to enter - etc.
NO luxury or frivolous items at all - nothing but necessity for survival.

The crowd using this are some of the most entitled humans on earth, they will get out of their bmws and post many discouraging tik toks from their new iPhones about how lazy the tax paying Americans are for no longer funding their cherry sprite and Cheeto purchases

It should always have remained that way. They sold it, "But it's 'muh cheaper' to just let them buy groceries at Wal-Mart with food stamps."
Yeah, but you just made it so convenient that it will just expand indefinitely to where it is now - something like 42 million people.
Running a government food assistance store (basically Federalize the food bank), with a very, very limited set of options. Chicken, produce, rice, potatoes, staples. Very, very limited bags, cans or boxes. Sufficient to maintain life and reasonably healthy/nutritious.
Don't like those options? Get a job.

What you really expect people to have to work for a living? Shame on you. You are heartless. You want people to die. You are not Christian. I expect a myriad of other negative statements, but truth is people are resilient. People survived before the government started give aways and would be able to again. The problem is the pool of qualified needy has increased significantly.
Add to that the number of illegal immigrants now getting government handout. Now many more people riding in the wagon then helping pull it.
33% or 1/3 of the population!! on the dole.
In 2022, approximately one in three Americans was enrolled in at least one government assistance program, which translates to about 33% of the population receiving some form of federal assistance. This includes various programs aimed at supporting individuals and families in need.

They won't do this because Walmart will lose too much money.

There are people that exploit the system, always will be.
However I’d wager that the larger majority needs this benefit. A lot of people tend to dwell on the minority of people that take advantage.
This isn’t the 1930’s.

Thank Obama for the expansion of SNAP. During his administration there were infomercials describing the awesomeness of SNAP, how lots of people are eligible and don’t know it, and how easy the application process is.

Did you have to show income to get commodities?

They shouldn't starve anyway. Food banks everywhere.
People are also hiring.

true, but you will lose most elections.
You would need a temp policy in place to phase it out over time, not cut it off at once or the republican party is dead in the water.

totally unsustainable - got to get that to low single digits
And I am all for leaving it in the hands of private charities (and by charity - I mean NO govt involvement)
Let the private charities decide the worthiness of the individual and how to distribute their limited resources. Stop just handing out stuff to anyone who walks up.
I grew up in the depression era (born at the very depth) and people were much skinnier then, more able to work, more willing to work at anything, and overall much more helpful to those in true need -- not much sympathy for free-loaders.
One of my first life-lessons was how my mom handled the hobos who came around (now think they had our house marked because they always got something really good to eat) BUT - she would always ask them to do some small task while she prepared their food. I asked her once why she had them do it because a lot of the time they were chores that I was supposed to do.
She said - "it makes them fell better about themselves if they earn it" - I've lived by that lesson my entire life.

Congress recently held hearings on this issue of SNAP reform. Question was whether to phase out Cola and soft drinks from the benefit.
Result: Coca Cola Company sent lobbyists to testify against the proposal and in favor of continuing the current practice of Soft Drinks being first on the list of things being "bought" with SNAP and EBT cards.
Corporations like Coca Cola like things just the way they are, and they have influence in Congress via $$$

Right because in 2025 you've had multiple generations of learned helplessness.
No one needs debbie cakes.
People aren't buying needs with food stamps. They are buying wants.

It will never happen because "Oh, won't someone think of the children!"

Yet, my 78 year old mother on $1400/month fixed income has been denied and told that she isn’t qualified twice.
