I'm looking to seed my Tiftuf Bermuda with Rye for the "winter" but would also like to apply granular preeemergent (dimension) in the next week or so. Has anyone done this combo with much success?

just wondering, why do you want to mow during the winter?
Usually im tired of mowing by september and ready for a break.

Won’t work. Your choice - either winter rye grass lawn or winter weeds…..lol.
Well, you could plant rye grass now, and perhaps after several weeks after all the rye grass seed has germinated and grown a bit, apply Dimension, but not the other way around. Won’t help with cool season weed seeds that germinate while you are waiting to apply Dimension.

If your pre emergent is applied right you will have wasted money on rye seed. If your rye seed does come up then you applied the pre em wrong and wasted money on chemical.

I have been doing a fall preemergent for the last 10 years but was thinking of doing rye this fall instead for two reasons. First, we haven’t had any rain and I have not wanted to put out the preemergent and try to water it all in. I’m working with about 2 acres. Second, I’ve got some spots in the yard that I have not been able to get the Bermuda to take - mostly because of adjacent live oak trees. I was thinking rye grass might be beneficial to get some roots down and when it died off next year, the decomposing roots ect would benefit the soil. I know I will need to aerate, add some top soil and figure out a watering system around the live oaks but I thought a season of rye might help a little. I’m stumped because I know the fall preemergent has done remarkable controlling winter weeds. My winter yard has been all brown without significant poa or other weeds for a long time. Any thoughts against seeding with rye? This is northwest la. I really appreciate any thoughts from this board. The input from this forum has really helped me.

I had a lot of dirt brought in at the end of summer last year so I seeded it with rye grass because I didn't want a mudhole for the family Christmas party.
Do you want to be cutting grass all winter? Because you will be cutting grass all winter. You will probably have to kill it off in the spring.
It's a very wet cutting grass...as in even when bone dry it cuts wet and sticks to everything. Perennial Rye might be better but there was none available to me for the timing I needed.

Put my pre emerge down this morning. Finally, got some rain...1/2" or so. Soil temp 73 degrees. Life is good!

If you use quality rye seed and sow heavy then you won’t have any weeds.
Use a pre in February for Bermuda crabgrass and such.
Spray out the rye on April 1st.
