No back pay

Their pay checks should go to funding military during this time.

Agreed but no one in congress is living off their congressional salary except the new kid on the block who hasn’t gotten a lucrative grift yet.

Things that Congress doesn't give a shite about:

1. Their pay
2. Their constituents

Seems like tying congressional pay to votes sets a really bad precedent.

You'll see members vote in favor of bad funding bills just because they want to keep getting paid.

I agree.

Problem is, however, whether Congress gets paid or not, Congress ALWAYS gets paid. If you catch my meaning.

You might want to edit. I think they do care about their pay

Most of these people aren’t living on $180,000/yr. Losing that revenue stream temporarily is for them, a minor annoyance at most.

This is true. Most, but not all, are wealthy before they enter Congress

This is the purpose of the 27th amendment. Representatives can’t vote to change (increase) their current pay.

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.”

Changes to pay structure (including not getting paid) can only be enacted after the next election.

To the OPs point - this congress can certainly make a law to withhold the pay to representatives during future shutdowns.

This is one of those "sounds simple" topics that really isn't. The only congressional members this would really harm are the ones WITHOUT great wealth or influence, which tend to be the younger representatives. What you really want is a method to force them to be in session and work towards a resolution. You don't want to force them to vote against their constituents' desires due to withholding pay.

They all engage in insider trading, and the public hasn't held them accountable for it. They certainly won't vote against their own financial interests.

OK, give them a choice. You can get your salary and forfeit all of the gains in your stock holdings while in office.
Or...Forfeit your salary and keep all of your stock gains.

Agree 110%! They have certainly NOT earned their pay. I would offer their salaries directly to those critical services/essential personnel - who are NOT currently being paid - who are keeping our airports safely open and our military bases still operating effectively in support of our warfighters & their families.
