Cape Verde should qualify today. Not a surprise a country full of Portuguese-born rejects could run rampant in a group of crap CAF teams. I guess it just used to not be the cool thing to do, but I think you're seeing a lot of players eligible for one country choose that route as opposed to riding the pine on their county of birth's team.

I just looked it up. Wow, they just let all the teams in for final qualification. Nine groups of six with the top team in each group qualifying, and the top 4 second place teams in a playoff to get into a playoff (I think I saw that right). You have 10 games to make the WC, and that is it. Concacaf gets a lot wrong, but I do appreciate that final qualification doesn't involve the entire federation.

Europe also has a path for runners up in groups to qualify for the World Cup without having to play in the intercontinental playoff. That was my main point. CAF puts a lot of pressure on those 10 games.

Nigeria beats Benin 4-0 to claim 2nd place and the playoff spot AND knock Benin out entirely

That is ROUGH for Benin... yikes. Hurt them that they had a chance to take 1st and the auto spot, so they probably really went for it against Nigeria. Had they parked the bus and went for a much more manageable 1-0 defeat or something, they'd still have the chance to qualify.

Wouldn't shock me if the front 6 is our lineup for the WC

Tuchel has talked about the best team, and that's back to back good performances, Anderson looking very comfortable again. It's no sure fire thing Palmer and Bellingham get into the team, though I could see Palmer taking Rogers spot.

It’s the rational thing to do… not every player will make a world powerhouse national team

I get it and agree. Glad we're seeing it now. Makes things a lot more interesting.

I don’t see mention of it in this thread so for those less aware, there was a March ruling (which was never publicly announced by CAF or FIFA) that with Eritrea out of the competition, the results against the worst-place team in each group would not count in the best 2nd place rankings

So Nigeria qualified for the playoffs as the 4th best 2nd place team (15 points in 8 counted matches) entirely because their two 1-1 draws (2 points) against last-place Zimbabwe were thrown out…

While Burkina Faso (also 15 points in 8 counted matches, just 1 GD off) had 4-1 and 6-0 wins (6 points) against Djibouti thrown out. As the 5th place runner-up, they miss out on the playoffs

Without that nonsense, Burkina Faso finishes with 21 points, Nigeria 17. Nigeria would have finished the 7th place runner-up and not qualify for the playoffs. Burkina Faso would qualify in 3rd

You won’t exactly see the Burkina Faso faithful pound social media, but it’s a scandal. CONCACAF can’t hold a candle to CAF
