Is he at this point just a wasted pick? If we’re gonna go with rattler, what’s the purpose of spending a top 40 pick on a backup QB when there were other positions that could help this team develop.

You’ll get downvoted, but this is the correct take. It was a waste of the 40th overall pick where we could have gotten a player who is starting now.

If I had to bet on what the actual current situation is I’d say it’s more about Rattler just being a good bit better than him since the summer.

I don’t think it’s a matter of waiting X amount of weeks for Shough to take over as much as Rattler has just been better.

No

They didn't know they were going with Rattler when they picked at 40 last year.

At the time they were up to pick at 40 last draft, there were many needs on this team including QB.

Whether out not Rattler is the guy remains to be seen, Shough is a QB they picked, and picked in the 2nd round. This tells me They had concerns about whether to not Rattler could develop into a trusted starter for them. He's played well enough for the first 5 games to make it hard to pull him. The offense as a whole hasn't looked very good and benching Rattler for Shough likely isn't going to make it any better in the short term. I think they know this and they are in no hurry to hand Shough out to dry. (He was their guy remember, not Rattler.)

If it was obvious the Saints would be winning games if not for Rattler believe me they would make the change, but sadly the whole teams is just not very good right now. Give it time.

You shouldn't let it. It's a game that you have no control over. Don't let it control your emotions.

In the NFL, you either have a QB or you don't. The Saints did not have a QB going into the draft. QBs cost capital. You draft a QB until one pans out. Most don't.

If you have an issue with the Shough pick, then you are an idiot.

First off, is Rattler an actual middle tier QB? 1 win and low productions so far.

Secondly, even during pre-season, there was debate on who should start. It's possible that Shough is still the better long term QB.

Lastly, Dallas drafted Troy Aikmann and Steve Walsh in the same draft. They unloaded Steve Walsh on the Saints for a 1st round pick. How did that work out for Dallas?

You also have to factor in that publicly, the team probably though they had Carr for another 1-2 years for Shough to sit behind (don't recall if the out was after this year or next). Publicly, the extent of the injury had not been revealed until after the draft, and Carr did not retire until 1-2 weeks later.

No idea what they knew behind the scenes, but going into the draft I do not believe they suspected retirement was a possibility (hence the reworked contract given to him in March)

Rattler is a high end backup QB, low end starting QB

We do not know what Shough is

Well thought out and articulated.

Thank you.

Don’t worry, buddy. You can still fill out your mock drafts in your basement next spring.

I won’t say he is a wasted pick unless he flops or if we draft a QB in the first round next year.
Rattler started because he was the incumbent and he hasn’t played poorly enough to be replaced yet.

Jokes on you funny guy, I live in South Louisiana, we don’t have basements

But seriously, there were options there that could have immediately helped us

Correct. And we will know before the end of the season.

This.

They didn't have Rattler etched in stone as the 2025 starter when the picked Shough. Ultimately, they went with Rattler to start the season based on the fact he had experience. I don't think anyone believed Rattler was heads and shoulder better than Shough in preseason camp.

I fully believe that had the Saints lost on Sunday to go to 0-5 we would see Shough getting the start this week because of it being a home game. Instead, they'll stick with Rattler at least a few more weeks to see if the team can continue winning. If not, you'll see them make a change in the next few weeks.

Rattler played a solid game against one of the worst teams in the league. Prior to that he was pretty mediocre. Unless Rattler picks up his play against tougher teams, Shough will get his chance soon enough.

If Rattler keeps playing steady like this Shough wont get his chance...barring injury. So in hindsight yeah its a wasted pick. The question is....who would be taken there instead?

Rattler earned the start. You going to play the other dude instead just because he was a high draft pick? Rattler was also a draft pick and has been here longer.

So when we are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in say week 10 you think CKM keeps playing Ratt?

Focus on the 1st round ones that did not pan out.

He will start soon, as we continue to lose, and we can see what's going on. Right now we don't know what we have. I am impressed with what I saw in the preseason.

Rattler is not a starting NFL QB.
