I have a buddy that swears there are no laws that say you have to pay federal income tax. He’s self employed and does not pay. He’s always talking about videos of ex IRS agents on YouTube that say they haven’t filed in years and there are no laws stating you have to. I’ve seen the videos and they seem pretty convincing…… what do you guys think ? Should we all stop?

I know for a fact he isn’t lying and hasn’t filed in probably 10 to 15 years

Tax evasion is a crime. Except for that ...

What about the people who go to jail for not paying? The state will get its money. They can take money right out your bank.

People that never pay seem to stay off the radar for far longer than anyone would imagine. Once you start filing is when the state begins checking up on you and asking if everything is all right, because your estimated tax payment is lower than years past.

Its def evasion if you file and claim no or very little income.

Irwin Schiff (February 23, 1928 – October 16, 2015) was an American libertarian and tax resistance advocate known for writing and promoting literature in which he argued that the way in which the income tax in the United States is enforced upon individuals, as a tax on one's time or wages, is illegal and unconstitutional. Judges in several civil and criminal cases ruled in favor of the federal government and against Schiff. As a result of these judicial rulings Schiff was in a hospital prison serving a sentence of 162 months (13.5 years) at the time of his death

I had someone tell me that but I’m not trying to find out.

26 USCode sec 1 imposes taxes. There’s a law that says you have to pay and there are criminal laws for evasion or failure to pay/file.
26 U.S. Code § 7203 - Willful failure to file return, supply information, or pay tax
Any person required under this title to pay any estimated tax or tax, or required by this title or by regulations made under authority thereof to make a return, keep any records, or supply any information, who willfully fails to pay such estimated tax or tax, make such return, keep such records, or supply such information, at the time or times required by law or regulations, shall, in addition to other penalties provided by law, be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not more than $25,000 ($100,000 in the case of a corporation), or imprisoned not more than 1 year, or both, together with the costs of prosecution. In the case of any person with respect to whom there is a failure to pay any estimated tax, this section shall not apply to such person with respect to such failure if there is no addition to tax under section 6654 or 6655 with respect to such failure. In the case of a willful violation of any provision of section 6050I, the first sentence of this section shall be applied by substituting “felony” for “misdemeanor” and “5 years” for “1 year”.
Edited bc I originally said there was no law requiring you to pay but then below that, cited the law, contradicting myself.
