Zion looks good but I'm still upset it took him 5 or 6 seasons to do it

Fears is gonna be good just gotta give him some time

Love Jose but don't know how he gets minutes when everyone is healthy

Jordan Poole is this teams Ed monix that actually played when they won a championship, he should start even when Murray gets back. He should be the pg for this team

Looney and Missi should be a serviceable duo at the 5

Hawkins, trey, bey, Poole, fears, and herb should provide more than enough space for zion

Don't see how Murray fits in on this team, he reminds of a shorter bi, needs the ball in his hand and can't space the floor, he should come off the bench but then he would be taking minutes away from Jose, Hawkins, fears

My one takeaway:

They need to play a team with a pulse before I get excited about anything.

Hawkins
should be treated like a rookie and earn his role and his minutes. That sophomore season was there for him with plenty of injuries and opportunities and thats disregarding his horrendous SL performance...just soo disappointing. Hopefully this offseason he put in some work that translates.

I agree with everything, especially Murray. Let’s see this for 10-15 games from our 1s and I’ll agree. Was wondering if Dumars will ship him out as he wasn’t his acquisition.

I wouldn’t mind Murray if he wanted to come back and play pass first PG but he’s not an efficient scorer.

The biggest takeaway is that Zion looks like a completely different player.

I don't really expect his scoring to change, but he's going to set career highs in steals, assists, and rebounds. He's an elite player in every way now, which is something that hasn't been true in the past.

My one takeaway: Excited and honest Australian play by play guy paired with calmer black commentary guy is an excellent broadcast team formula, and I want more of it.

My Takeway on Poole. He's not a PG. He's a lead guard that can do a little bit of everything but this team will need to run the offense by committee. Poole can be a little too wild if given too much free reign.

That means a combination Trey, Zion, Herb, Jose, and Fears will take turns to lessen the load on Poole. That's not a negative since we will have multiple options with ball handling, creation, and actions for each guy.

Poole has a lot of gravity and knows how to use it to his advantage with his range, handles, and shiftiness to get where he wants on the floor. His shot diet has been impressive as it's been mostly 3s and rim and nothing in between. He's also good off ball cutting to the basket.

One thing I really like about him is his ability to draw contact and get to the line. He has a really nice bag at the basket and knows how to attack angles with good body control.

His defense... Well its not good to be frank. Like CJ, he gets swallowed up on screens and doesn't have the recovery speed to make up for it. But his 1 on 1 defense has been fine. So ideally, Poole defending a non point guard would be ideal.

The best thing I've seen is his ability to handle ball pressure... These guys were trying to ball pressure him from 94 feet and he just easily got down the floor under the control and without any sweat.

The ball movement has been nice to watch. Everyone is passing, getting into their sets, running actions, and playing with good pace. I'm really loving how Poole, Trey, and Zion are playing off each other. Bey really understands his role. He played the Herb role in game 1 and picked up his offense and aggression in game 2 when Trey was out. He's really everything i want in a back up and he's very calm and under control out there.

I 100% agree. This is actually one of my bigger concerns for the season: needing to rely on Zion too much to run the point. Another takeaway from Melbourne is that Trey has really improved his ball-handling, and that's a big plus in that regard. It's also why I really hope that Jose escaped serious injury. I liked hearing Andrew Lopez say that Dejounte wasn't in Australia because he's rushing to get back as fast as he can, and a day on a plane is a day without physical therapy.

Murray coming off bench would actually be ideal. He's a ball dominant guard who can't space that well, but he's a do it all offensive player who is solid defensively (assuming health).

Starting 5:
Poole, Jones, Murphy, Williamson, Looney - 3 ball handlers and 2 spacers.

Then your subs out:
Murray, fears, Alvarado, Hawkins for guards
Bey and Peavy as your wings
Queen, miss, and karlo as your bigs

That's not what I saw last season.

Only 2 preseason games, but he hasn’t made a single shot over 4 feet.

Are you simply liking his jump shot form or not including jump shot when you say every way now ?

It's been two games against NBL competition

Let's slow our roll here.

Realistic takeaways
.
Zion looks good. He still has about 10 pounds to lose to get to final form, but he's close. He looks engaged and is playing and leading hard. He's gambling a lot on defense. Looked like he was back at Duke, playing against a D2 team. The same gambles will need to be dialed back in the NBA. He still likes to ball watch and leave his guy open for 3.

Bey is going to be a key player on this team

Jordan Poole is a fun watch. I like him more than McCollum. He actually has more basketball IQ and is a lot more explosive.

Fears reminds me of a bowed up, better ball handling Kira Lewis. He's a long way away from being a good player. He's a fun player, but he still is extremely raw and terrible in the half court.

Missi looked like he was on the set of Space Jam. Hopefully he takes a step forward. He'd be the MVP of the NBL.

Looney still sets good screens. He has a key role on this team.

D Queen looked slim on the bench

Random Free Spin: Christian Shumate looks super athletic and at a solid 6'6" 215 has a chance to grow into the Naji Marshall role...

Christian Shumate is not even (1) of our 2 way contracts and hopefully would not ever see the court on this team. (That would mean things went really wrong).

Yes he played for McNeese and will probably get some local love. No he should not be on the court for any reason. Nothing personal.

He's not a center and not a PG/ SG. We already have Trey, Herb, Bey, Peavy, and Z to rotate at 3.

I really want to see these 2 lineups this year:

3pt

Poole
Bey
Trey
Karlo
Queen

All Def

Murray
Herb
Zion
Looney
Missi

Agreed.

Poole/ Murray/ Fears
Herb/ Bey/ Jose/Hawk
Trey/ Peavy
Zion/ Karlo
Looney/ Missi/ Queen

This is how we are looking. If Fears is impossible to bench then we will really only have minutes for 1 of Jose/ Hawk. To this point Jose makes more sense at backup SG than Hawk with what we've seen.

Realistically (1) of those 2 has to become a serious backup SG option. If not then they both need to go.

I also think we need to give Shumate a two-way deal. Let one of Dickinson or Alexander go.

We are already the only NBA team without a 7' on the roster. There are 0 reasons to get rid of Dickinson for a guy who has an even lesser probability to get on the court. Dickenson is closer to playing regular season games than Shumate is to playing any minutes at all even on a 2 way.

Its absolutely crazy to even consider dropping the only 7' on the "roster" for Shumate.

Y'all can't keep suggesting we hold on to players like Shumate while continuing to gatekeep Jose/ Hawk as viable depth chart pieces.

Oh, I don't think Hawk should be on the roster at all.

Frankly, go all in and try and get Malik Beasley on the cheap.

Jose I'm for keeping because of what he means in the locker room and the huddles. He's the heart of the team. We can agree to disagree on him.

Dickinson, fine, I hear you. Either way Shumate on a two-way as a guy that can hustle in practice...that guy makes others better. JMO
