Shreveport Country Club burns to the ground

It’s been closed and abandoned for several years. Not only was it located in a terrible neighborhood, but it was also located in an inconvenient location and far from the better neighborhoods of Shreveport.
I thought I was being pranked the first time I played the course. I drove into Shreveport to meet friends at the club, and exited I-20 near the fairgrounds which I knew was a bad area, and my directions led me deeper into the hood before finally reaching the club.
For years it was considered one of the best courses in the state. The famed golf architect A.W. Tillinghast was involved in the design and construction of the course.
In the early 90’s they installed Bent Grass greens, that included huge fans mounted near the greens in an attempt to keep them cool.
It was a great layout and design, but there was no way a golf course of any type could survive in that location.
The last I heard either Denny Duron or an Evangel charity owned the land and wanted to grill for gas there.

That’s terrible. And suspicious.

Yea, this screams insurance fraud.
The property is virtually worthless.
I have no idea who owns it.

It’s been in the news lately because Apex wants to drill a couple of gas wells out there, and the neighborhood is not in favor of it.
Shreveport Community Church owns the property now.

Grew up on that course learning the game .. what a classic course that was so much fun to play. The greens were incredible when in season and it taught you how to play the game using different shots and styles. Shame what happened but ultimately was doomed due to location and the opening of southern trace..

way a golf course of any type could survive in that location.
I went past it a million times as a preteen in the late '70s. We was po white trash so of course I never went in.
I drove past it in the '90s and it was still open, though the area had gone to total shite then (I can only imagine what it's like now). Apparently the course closed in 2005. Jackson is always 20 yrs ahead of LA.
Incredibly, Mynelle Gardens is apparently still open.
Speaking of Jackson, Google AI offered this;

AI Overview
To avoid crime and danger in Jackson, MS, stay out of residential and industrial areas of the south and southwest parts of the city, especially at night, and avoid being in the downtown area alone after dark. While the city has made strides in safety with a reported decline in homicides, it is prudent to use caution, particularly in less populated areas after the sun goes down.
Areas and Times to Exercise Caution
South and Southwest Parts of the City: These areas are often described as having higher crime rates, so it's best to avoid them, especially at night.
Downtown Jackson: While daytime is generally safer, you should avoid wandering alone in the downtown area after dark.
Interstates 55 and 220: It is advisable to avoid these major thoroughfares after dark.
West Jxn makes South Jxn look like Palm Springs.
There are parts of West Jxn where you can easily forget you are in America. You'd think someone magically transported you to Mogadishu.
