A New Orleans man who was shot and killed in a Tuesday carjacking as he picked up his young son from a Mid-City nursery was "a devoted father, a respected chef and an excellent team member," according to restaurateur Ralph Brennan.

"Carl Morgan ... brought an energy to our kitchen that won't be replaced," Brennan said in a statement issued Thursday afternoon. "This is a tremendous loss for his family, for our team, and for everyone who knew him."

Morgan worked as a sous chef for Brennan's Restaurant, where he brought "heat, hustle and heart" to his cooking and his team members, according to a fundraiser for his funeral expenses. Though his presence could be "intimidating," thanks in part to his large build and chef's knife tattoo, Morgan was a "sweet" person who served as a teacher in the kitchen and a master coordinator between the front and back of house, according to server Bailey Marie.

Morgan was picking up his son from Abeona House Child Discovery Center at 3401 Canal Street at around 5:13 p.m. Tuesday when Raymond Wells, 21, allegedly shot him and stole his vehicle. Morgan was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies found Wells at around 6:30 p.m. in the stolen car on the shoulder of Interstate 10's westbound lanes near the Bonnabel Boulevard exit. He had been shot in the head and was in “extremely grave condition” Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

A warrant for first-degree murder awaits him should he survive. Officials did not say who is suspected of shooting Wells.

Why anyone would raise a family in that shithole is beyond me.

The whole real estate market is driven by people getting themselves and their families away from these animals. Thank your local democrat for yet more unnecessary violence at the hands of their constituents.

The poster Cell Of Awareness detailed his criminal history in the other thread.

Yes, multiple arrests and convictions/plea deals, slaps on the wrist during sentencing, and almost all involved possession and/or use of an illegal weapon.

What a waste of a life. He lived in Louisiana because he was a chef and he may never have thought of the potential dangers, just about being the best he could be.

Most of the crime in NOLA today can be traced back to DAs and judges failing at their public responsibilities

What I heard was the killer was getting chased by someone else trying to kill him. To get away he carjacked and shot the innocent chef and then the person who was originally chasing the killer caught up him at some point in the stolen car.

I was told that there is no crime in New Orleans. Was that information wrong?
