New England, once a national leader in education, has seen steep academic declines in early literacy, while Southern states like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama have made major gains by adopting phonics-based curricula, teacher training, and accountability systems. This is actually not at all true.
With adjusting for demographics or without Mississippi ranks top 10. Louisiana is similar.
It’s like southerners have been so beaten down by northern propaganda and the media that they believe that they are dumber than northerners.

First off, why the frick would anyone on this site subscribe to the Boston Globe? Hardly anyone even subscribes to the Advocate, much less some other cities newspaper.
and B, What's with all these MS, LA, AL is better in literacy than everyone else threads?
I don't for one second believe this bullshite. I'm sure they are figuring out a way to present the scores so that we are showing vast improvement, but we've still got way too many don't give a shite parents/kids throughout the NO, BR, Shreveport inner city schools to make me believe we've somehow surpassed states that don't have that same overwhelming demographic.
Something likely changed in how they report their scores, like hey if this kid is retarded, don't count him. Well guess what, we have a 3rd grade class that's 90% retarded based on the new retard criteria, so we'll just report the 10% who are actually smart.

I provided the summary because I assumed that no one subscribes to the Globe. The rest of your talking points show that you just don't listen to anything in the news because if you did, you would know that Louisiana and Mississippi have been on a long trajectory to getting out of 49th/50th. It's not voodoo with the scores or changing metrics it's a lot of change in policy and hard work on school's part.

I don’t watch or read the news. It’s always full of lies and misinformation.
And I don’t believe you, or wherever you’re getting your news from. There’s way too large of a proportionate poor blacks in this state for our literacy to be surpassing vast majority white states with much higher family incomes. And on top of that the poor whites in this state are just as illiterate.
Ain’t nobody hooked on phonics enough out here to be the 16th most literate state.

We don’t like reporting the actual facts that matter when reporting on data in this country anymore. We look to manipulate the data to prove our point (usually with some financial incentives to prove that point) b/c we know the majority of people are fricking idiots who aren’t capable of thinking on their own and they’ll believe anything they see on the internet.
Knowing that, and knowing the demographics of this state and its poverty level, I don’t believe this report on literacy.

No, you fricking defeatist troglodytes. Louisiana was one of the first states to abandon “whole language” “three cue” bullshite and move back to phonics based “science of reading” methods. It’s a big fricking deal. Stop ignorantly minimizing that.

The data is based on federal NAEP test scores--the same test taken nationally among select fourth graders and eighth graders and given by federal workers.

I’d look at tests that are comparing apples to apples when comparing school systems. For high schools what is the average ACT or SAT? Maybe scores on AP tests if the schools use the same test. I’m not interested in this affirmative action adjusted scoring for race or whatever.

You can throw all the “facts” you want at me. I am more than aware of the poor culture in our public school systems in this state, especially in our bigger cities. Doesn’t mattter how you teach anything to them, they don’t give a shite. Hooked on phonics doesn’t fix that.
