Literally tie Government pay to balanced budgets.

Hilarious that you think those multi-millionaires give a shite about a $175K salary. They make their money from corruption and back door deals, not a paycheck.

The fact they spend millions of dollars to get a job that pays $175k should tell you all you need to know about how they make their money.

Government Shutdowns are extremely healthy for the USA. They let the citizens know that we really do not need so much government.

"Why do I need the government" is the question everyone should ask themselves. Everyone will find out quickly how little they need it for.

We need an Amendment which states that, in the event of any government shutdown, members of Congress forfeit their pay for the entire shutdown period and shall never recover it.

As long as there are no serious consequences, they'll keep playing games.

We also need a balanced budget amendment like most states have, but neither are likely to ever happen.

The 27th Amendment says:

“No law varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.”

The word "varying" is the key. Is delaying "varying"? .It's not changing the amount. Technically the gov't is "broke" in a shut down and the funds technically isn't there.

it would be far easier and quicker to challenge 27a than try to create a new amendment

I dont think that would make democrats not want to 100% fund illegal alien healthcare on the taxpayers dime. They are millionaires from grifting anyway, they wipe their arse with their paycheck

Send them home without pay and eliminate the perks as well. If their staff goes home, they go home.

The small amount they are paid is nothing compared to their income from stocks and bribes.

You think they care about the salary? Congress memebers become multi-millionaires in a couple of years. And it's not from their "salary".

And no back pay because their inability to do their jobs resulted in the stoppage in the first place.

I don't think "delaying" is considered "varying" based on the background context of the amendment.

The Amendment was first proposed by James Madison, it took 200 years for it to get enough of a push to get ratified (1992). The idea behind it was to not allow members of Congress to vote themselves raises without the public being able to weigh in on it by forcing it to wait until after the next election before going into effect.

I get the idea, I just don't think it would pass Constitutional muster.
