Disney had some pretty scary movies come out in the 80s. Hopefully The Watcher in the Woods gets some streaming love this October too.

Disney had a string of dark movies in the early 80s. Black Hole, Wicked, Watcher.. All pretty scary for little CAD. Watcher is the first movie I ever saw with Bette Davis.

The book by Ray Bradbury is even scarier.

Bradbury is one of my favorite writers and his skill with language and the ability to describe things is unparalleled.

Stephen King is good too. But what takes King a paragraph to vividly describe, Bradbury does even better in one sentence.

I know I've read the book but I can't remember if I've ever seen the movie or not.

I will fire this up when its available...

Young Jonathan Pryce will be worth the price alone...

God, I am getting up there a bit.

Bradbury’s short stories are some of the best in all of literature. The Veldt, There Will Come Soft Rains, The October Game, Small Assassin. King gets a ton of attention (in some cases deservedly so) but Bradbury did as much for sci-fi and horror lit as Twilight Zone and Isaac Asimov.

He has another book that's not horror. It's more light Sci-Fi called Dandelion Wine. It's a great slice Midwest Americana from the mid 20th century and it's excellent.

book was one of my favorites growing up

movie was ok, a bit of a disappointment - the changes they made in the plot (focusing more on the father character than the son, making the witch young and sexy instead of old and blind) diminished the power of the narrative

For some reason I always get this movie mixed up with "Dream and Little Dream". The plots are not that similar but maybe because they both star Jason Robards...

I just finished this with the wife. Neither of us had ever seen it before so there’s no nostalgia factor. Though I do love Ray Bradbury. His writing feels nostalgic, even upon a family rat read. (Edit *first read. But “family rat read” is hilarious)

Eh….
Not terrible. Just not great. Slow pacing. Bad special effects.

But I’ll say this. I could see it being an excellent movie if remade by a good director. It’s a cool story.
