We got the annual heart worm shot this year so we’re good on that. What is everyone doing to get a monthly flea in tick oral preventative each month? Or taking other suggestions.

Thanks,

I keep my dogs on the recommended vaxx schedule because I can’t board them without the proper vaccines. But I have never given them flea and tick preventative. I’ve never had a problem with fleas or ticks. I guess it because I use insecticide on my lawn every spring.

Same with Nexgard Plus and Simparica Trio. Everything in a once-a-month chewable.

Simparica has the best tick coverage in terms of number of species. Drugs in that class are called isoxazoline drugs and alternatives are nexguard, credelio, bravecto (chewable lasts for about 3 months, they just released an injectable that lasts for 12 months for fleas/ticks).

Be sure not to use a combo (simparica trio, nexguard plus, credelio quatro) while also using the proheart 12 injection, you would be double dipping. If you want to switch to an “all-in-one” then do it after your injection expires.

Trifexis wont prevent ticks, it is not labeled to either.

My Dane is on nexgard plus. I have to buy multiple doses each month because it only goes up to 130lbs. I guess that's one of the downsides of owning a giant breed.

Move to Wyoming. They don’t have fleas at that altitude.

Same. Talstar or Bifen kills everything you need to kill in the yard. One application of granules per year wipes out everything. Even when the fire ants swarm, the new mounds die in a day.

Bravecto has been excellent for us. Haven’t seen a flea or a tick since switching to it.

Our three dogs are already there. I’m quite certain between the three, they have a combined IQ of 2.

Bravecto. The label says it works for three months, but after a few year’s of use I dose it the early Spring the mid summer. My dogs are city mice and country mice and they are bug free.

My Dad was a veterinarian. He suggested a topical treatment for fleas. Make a slurry of sand and rubbing alcohol and rub it all over the dog. The fleas get drunk and start throwing rocks at each other...problem solved.
