I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve walked out on my porch and looked down and seen a box turtle in the middle of the yard. Didn’t see him walking there..didn’t see him come out of the woods. He’s just there.

Then minutes later, after getting a cup of coffee, bitching online about GA losing again to Bama, look down and he’s gone. Not slowly moving on the other side of the yard….just gone.

Do the teleport? Are they interdemensional beings? Do they run when you’re not looking?

It’s mating season so they got a little kick in their step. They also hide themselves places

Box Turtles are ferried around by Crows in a box. You will never see the Crow with a box that has the Box Turtle inside because Crows can sense when humans are watching. As soon as they know you are not paying attention, they drop the turtle off at its destination. It happens so stealthily that it seems magical to us but it’s just animal kingdom slight of hand.

That’s as good an explanation as any.

Camouflage

Rabbits can pull the same magic. They move a few feet and it’s hard to see them against the grass, trees, etc

Certain animals can transcend to other plains of reality, the box turtle is one of them.. along with gold fish.

Box turtles and speckled kingsnakes are my favorite most magical accidental wildlife encounters.

Watched one on my security camera sneak away at the edge of the house all the way around to a bush then disappeared. Odd but they can move quicker than you think

What did the snail say as it rode on the turtle’s back?
WEEEEEEEEE!

What do you get when you cross a turtle with a giraffe?
A turtle-neck.

Where do you find a leg-less turtle?
Wherever you left it!

They can move much faster than you think..

Had one as a pet for 10 plus years .. idk.. long time .. built a wooden box like thing in back yard .. he would come when I would call him.. would treat him to live worms and strawberries…

Let a camp borrow him one summer for their nature program .. and something “ happened “ to him??? I know I never got the true story but just let I go..

Fun fact: Box Turtles have a range of only about one mile. They stay in that area their entire life and if you move or relocate them they can get depressed and die.

I know what happened. They put him down in open grass and turned their back on him and he vanished.

That’s what they do.

This cracked me up, picturing a little turtle head giving you the nonchalant side eye to see if you're looking, then kicking it into high gear and sprinting off. Hehehe
