Is there any need for any military attack equipment to be manned anymore?

Tanks, jets, ships, subs…literally none of them require an actual human in or on it. This can all be done remotely now.

I agree. The age of the drone is here.

Sure, and I am not out here suggesting we should killed each other. But what actually happens when say two drones disable each other? Did it do anything?
Ultimately it really only matters when humans are involved. The purpose of a drone is to harm the othersides humans at some point.

You aim your attack drones at people. And you have other drones to disable their protective drones.

Throw track on a tank and get back to me.

Based on what is happening these days, most of the current battle space has gone back to fiber optic cables to control.
I suppose that is remote

Never said there is no need for humans at all in the military. Just saying you don’t need a human in or on an attack equipment. Throw a track? Send a recovery drone to load it up and bring it back where humans can fix it out of harms way. Send it back out.

ships, subs
I expect these will still need to be crewed for the time being. USV’s exist, but they don’t serve the same purpose as aircraft carriers or missile cruisers. When you’re talking about a vessel that has to be able to deploy from literally anywhere on the planet and maintain long periods of time at sea, you need a crew to keep everything running. Someone has to fix shite when it breaks, handle ordnance, etc.
At some point we might see aircraft carriers that look like floating Amazon facilities, with autonomous robots ferrying drones to and from the flight deck. Not to mention operating/maintaining the nuclear reactor without any human intervention. I think we are probably a long way off from that right now though. And as long as you need carriers, you also need carrier groups.
In the short term I’d expect those carrier groups to become the home bases for the unmanned operations actually engaging in combat.
Subs I think have the same issue.. you probably aren’t going to trust robots with no connection to the outside world to operate nuclear reactors. And you DEFINITELY aren’t going to trust them with your actual nuclear weapons.
…I hope.

What you are talking about only works for a highly advanced military vs a backwater country that has no drone capability. At some point it has to be drone vs people.
There is another option: watch the OG Star Trek episode A Taste of Armageddon. The "wars" are fought by simulation and the simulated deaths are then carried out in execution chambers. The countries infrastructure is left in tact.
We are still a long way from battle space without humans.

There is always a need for infantry killers.
Queen of battle. Infantry is never going away, ever. You going to fly a drone into a Hamas tunnel? Your drone going to pop a terrorist holding a hostage faster than Delta can move a bureau, a rug, find a trap door with a dog, and find a hostage?
No.
I would rather firebomb places like Gaza and get it over with, but that's not acceptable according to the EU, so we'll resort to identifying and killing the enemy at close range. I'm OK with anything, as long as the enemy dies.
Attack equipment is 22 year olds that are alcoholics that want to prove themselves. You can't clear a building with a drone. You can clear a building with dudes that have been denied beer, coochie, and Zyns, because they're angry. They just so happen to have a 249 to take out their frustrations.

When I was a SAC missile man, there was a chain of authorization that had to act before any belligerent action was taken. I assume that is still the case. Part of the reasoning was that part of that chain could determine if the attack order was legal and stop the procedure if not. I think we still need people in that chain.

Wait, you are equating ICBM launches with what, exactly? 50k worth of explosives dropped in Iran?

no, the OP mentioned Subs, Carriers and missile ships so I assumed Nuclear weapons.

Planes absolutely need to be manned. What you don't want is a C5 Galaxy or C17 Globemaster loaded down crashing over a major metropolitan area. A drone is one thing but 840,000 pounds crashing into Midtown Memphis for example would be an absolute disaster. That just has to happen once and you can forget it.
It's not the in-flight that's the issue. You need pilots for take offs and landings.

Equally odd, killing humans will not be the focus of future wars. It will be about attacking and destroying technology.
Posted on 9/26/25 at 2:21 am to sidewalkside
No because the others or ancient gods whatever u want to call them will be here soon enough and we will have different problems.
