Quitting Social Media -- Experiences

I think it's pretty well established that most of the vitriol in the United States today is driven in large part by social media. Clicks+Views=$$$ and there's no better way to get clicks and views than pissing people off and getting them arguing. Hell, we see it on this very site...if a thread goes 10+ pages, seems like 80%+ of the time you click on that last page and see that it's just a couple of folks in a pissing match.
Social media is poison. It colors our worldviews in black and white, right and wrong, us versus them. Nuance is completely lost. People losing family and friends because of online arguments. People getting livid with one another when their argument is just the two of them regurgitating complete bullshite they each read online. Bot farms funded by global adversaries trying to cause distrust and disillusionment. Algorithms are controlling millions upon millions of peoples' emotions...just to make a buck.
I quit social media and it's the best thing I've ever done for my mental health. Over 5 years ago I quit Facebook and last year I quit X/Twitter. Facebook, I found myself arguing with friends and family or, even if not arguing, thinking less of people due to not only their opinions but the way they expressed those opinions. On X, I was constantly in the comments just getting pissed off and debating nameless people (bots?) all in search of 30+ likes which, in my dumb head, meant my message was REALLY resonating! Just stupid. Hours each day glued to toxicity.
Since I've quit, I've been able to more easily separate the person from their belief systems. I'm constantly in a better mood. I find myself more optimistic about life. I more easily recognize the way we're all being manipulated. I have MUCH more free time to spend on things which are actually good for me and my soul. People pay a lot of money for therapy...getting offline was the best therapy I've ever had.
What are y'all's experiences quitting or dramatically cutting back? Any of y'all on the fence? It seems everyone I run into who has quit is really happy they did. Those first couple weeks are tough, but after that it's like an awakening lol.

To be fair, the OT is more anti-social media.

All true. I don't have any of that crap. I am old, employed full time and married. I don't have time or a legitimate reason to "connect" with people. The people who matter know how to reach me.

You don't have to quit it, you just have to not be an idiot when using it. That is way too big of an ask for many people, though.

I quit FB a couple years ago. I was getting some fishy friend requests. Besides that, I got in a bunch of political pissing contests, and it’s fruitless.
I’m still on X, Reddit, and here, but those are different. I don’t actually spend any time on X, unless it’s linked from somewhere else.
Frankly, I wish my wife would have quit FB.

the OT/PT is essentially just a social media aggregate site these days
people brag about not having X or TikTok but still consume the content on TD all day

I mainly view TD and Instagram. You can choose what you look at on TD, and overall this place is generally positive environment depending on the forum/thread.
On Instagram my feed is all my hobbies and interests so I don't feel any negativity.
I only use Facebook for the marketplace to look at used cars and motorcycles

I wish I could filter out all the new bullshite on FB and go back to seeing my friends, their kids, their trips, what they're cooking, etc. I don't want social media for anything but that, and I feel like I spend more time filtering out the BS than I do actually interacting. I've definitely thought more about signing off and deleting the apps lately than ever before.

Yep.

I got off of both instagram and facebook about a year ago. I guess I still have the accounts, but I deleted both apps from my phone. I haven't accessed either app since.
My access to social media now is limited to this site and the occasional X search for something related to work.
I also stopped 'watching' the news several years ago. I realized I didn't need to learn about a topic by listening to 7 people yell at each other for an hour, and then a different 7 people yell at each other during the next hour.
I typically read the WSJ to stay up on current events.
I can tell that I'm much less partisan now than I was beforehand. Not everything I experience gets framed via a political lens, which has been nice. In addition, I have a lot of time back, I had no idea how much time I actually spent on those apps. I've replaced it with more sleep (no more late night doom scrolling), exercise, and actual conversation with my wife and kids.
I do no miss it at all and don't ever see myself going back.

You have to use a little common sense with it. I use Facebook to catch up with old friends, and watch a few videos every now and again. Don't use anything else besides this message board.
People that think it's ruining the world, probably have too much daily usage.

Ha! I had a parenthetical pointing to TD as an exception but guess I deleted it. But you're right, I do still get into/read shite I don't need to on this site.
But if I quit, I'm not sure what y'all would do without me! ;)

Yep, I just checked, I live 15 minutes away from the shooting in Dallas this morning. Not one thing about it came across my twitter feed. Nearly 100% of what I saw was nfl and Ryder cup coverage. Why people hate watch/read shite is beyond me.
