Sorely needed. If you've seen it in the minor leagues or in the all star game this year, its pretty seamless. Batter or pitcher tap their head to signal a review, a 3d strikezone is shown on the video board and its upheld or changed. Bout a 20 second process.

While this change is welcomed, theres the underlying question that if we have the technology to track and overrule human error, why not eliminate the human error all together?

They want this to fail while also saying they tried to fix it

Does this mean one comment from the dugout negates the challenge?

Pitcher, catcher, and the batter are the ones that should know anyhow.

If we have the ability to do this, wouldn't accurary and speed of play go up even mre just making them the sole caller of the strike zone?

You will still need humans/video assistance for HBP's, foul tips and tags on the bags and plate, but I imagine ABS will eventually go the way it went for tennis with hawkeye. It will be used as a challenge system for 10 or so years before all pretense is removed and it becomes the way all balls and strikes are called.

These challenges are gonna get burned up quick by hitters. I’d only let my catcher call in the challenge.

Yeah you think about how often a batter reacts in some way while were seeing the zone tracker on TV that shows a pitch was maybe close but still a strike.

I'd imagine teams are going to have to drill into players, you only get two of these and their split between pitching and hitting. You better feel damn sure that youre right before you burn a challenge. And they'll probably preach situational validity too. If its 2 outs with nobody on and your already behind in the count, maybe lets not risk a challenge here.

I like the challenge system. I don't want it to take over the entire calling of balls and strikes

Two per game isn’t enough. It should be 1 per half inning.

NFL you’re on deck..game has gotten too fast for these old, fat dudes. Let the booth take over for pass interference, roughing the passer, unnecessary roughness, etc

They’re already slowly embracing with replay assistance

Yeah... this is going to get burned up in the first few innings and then players will be bitching the rest of the game about not being able to challenge.

Weaver & Martin would have hated this system. Arguing with a machine would not be near as much fun.

You keep getting more if you're right...

1 per half inning that’s only burned if you’re wrong. If it’s really only a 15-20 second process you aren’t extending the game much.

It’s needed.

Meh we've played 150 years of MLB without it... I just wonder how they'll determine the upper and lower bounds of the strike zone which changes with every stance

Yes, still good to have umps for overall and those things but strikes and balls should just be detected and sent to the umps and coaches.
