OT Gamblers: How can both money lines be negative?

Right now LSU is minus 102 while Ole Miss is minus 118.
How can that be? I thought one had to be the inverse of the other in some way.
Is there any way to arbitrage it?
(This is on FanDuel.)

The numbers can be whatever makes Vegas the most money.

So why would I take a negative money line on the underdog?

Da fuq? LSU moneyline is +100 on bet mgm baw. I just loaded up on it

It means its a pick 'em game and the house isn't willing to lose money on it, so both lines are negative.

Ok. I guess that makes sense. But wouldn’t the spread be pick em?

The spread is +1.5 that is a pick em spread

The book takes $10 as a fee for betting. A regular game that isn’t pickem will be something like +100 vs -120 or -140 vs +120.
My book actually only takes $5 so a true pick em will be -105 vs -105

This is not how implied odds on a money line work

The house edge, aka the juice, aka the vig.
The real way that books make their money.

The book takes a vig, lines will never be the exact inverse
Posted on 9/22/25 at 8:58 pm to Mingo Was His NameO
My book has right now:
-110 vs 100
-123 vs +113
I’m sorry I didn’t get the exact numbers right

Becuase Vegas knows degenerates will bet on it anyway. It’s a win/win for them. No one is forcing them to set the money line at + on either side. If the juice is negative both ways they are going to profit regardless who wins, just like on spread betting with the juice on both sides being negative. Vegas wins either way

So does this imply that the Vegas oddsmakers think this is about even?

Ole Miss is what? A 2 point favorite? It seems like the perception is that its going to be a pretty even game, Ole Miss has the advantage because its at Ole Miss. Why would they set a +ML? It happens in games that bettors decide will be close..
I say bettors because that's who really controls the line. The book makers just try to get a number that will draw bets from both sides. If too much money goes to one side the line adjust to start getting people to bet the other side.
ESPN's gamecast has Ole Miss with a 73% change to win, lets say they used that to set their MLs. LSU would likely be +250 (I just threw a number out). People would be betting the shite out of LSU because its a pretty even matchup and the casino would lose a lot of LSU wins. So to appeal to bettors without them losing a lot of money (hopefully coming out ahead) both teams are -.
