Run game vs. SELA

Sorry to be a negative nelly but needs to be said that our run game still sucked against a glorified HS team. Run up the gut...2 yards...seemingly every time. JJ had a few good runs, but still feels like my daughter's flag football team could hold us to 2 yard carries.
If this keeps up, we'll just have to blow it off and stick with our strengths which is QB and receivers. Obviously that's not ideal. Maybe we throw in a few Nuss drop back/called runs. now and then to keep defenses honest.
Whatever the case, this OL is terrible. No two ways about it.

We gotta go 70% pass, 30% run, simple as that. The pass sets up the run for us and not vice-versa.

If I’m ole miss, I’m playing 2 high safeties and only rushing 3 and forcing LSU to have to run the ball to win.

Or Johnson just needs to be RB1 going forward. I can't believe he just happened to be lucky enough to be the only runner last night the oline made holes for.

We need to think quick passes. As we start ramping up to better DLs and rush schemes, this O line is gonna struggle.
We need to get the ball out quick and let our athletes do something in space.

I think they are ok with pass blocking, but it doesn't help that the running plays are extremely predictable, Durham has looked very tentative and slow, and Nuss barely ever runs so there isn't much guessing going on by the D.

This is the key and has to be our identity. I understand that Nuss may be banged up a little, but we really need to stretch the field more vertically too.
We are seeing a ton of passes to the flats. That just draws the defense in closer.

Last night the commentators talked about a film study they did on LSU run game, and they were right.
I’m sure yall know what I’m talking about.
They said that Durham gives up on the zone read too fast and doesn’t allow the play to develop and for the intended holes to open up.
Not 5 minutes after they said that, Durham did exactly that. He cuts back away from the play side and gets tackled for a loss and when they showed the replay you can clearly see the intended hole opens up right after he cuts back away from it.
Now here’s the deal. Against Florida and Clemson, he probably had to cut it back because against those teams I don’t think the holes ever opened up.
If my memory serves me correctly, the lineman were pushed back into the back field more times than there were EVER holes opened up the way the play was designed to.
So with that said, Durham seems to have lost trust in his lineman because last night he cut it back before there was even time to tell if the lineman were going to execute their blocks or not. He’s gotten so used to the line getting pushed back into himself, he runs away from his own lineman.
That is a problem, and idk that I blame him.
But with all that said, JJ ran the ball exceptionally well last night, and it was also nice to see Kaleb Jackson finally have the ball in the open field. I think on a check down he caught the ball in the open field and made a man miss, and then trucked the next tackler falling forward for another 3-4 yards.
I still have hope that the running game can progress.

Ohhh no we don’t need to do that. Since we can’t run the ball we have to live by throwing it. As a result we can’t risk hurting our already banged up QB…

We did that last year and lost.

Ole Miss may have the worst rushing defense in the SEC, so that would make for an interesting matchup.

Good observation. The book is obviously out on how to defend our offense right now. It’s on Sloan to make an adjustment. I’d like to see heavy emphasis on quick slants to Brown and Anderson. I think our O-line will get better as the season goes on, but if they can’t consistently run block, we will have to be very creative and efficient at the short yard passing game.

Short quick throws is who we is !!

Along with 70/30 Pass-Run ratio, we will have to keep a back or TE for pass protection as teams will run non stop stunts until this line figures out how to block them

A Anderson, Thomas will play big roles

Not true. Durham is not hitting the holes. They showed one last night that if Durham kept going to the outside, Adams made a hole but Durham cut it back inside and was stuffed. He is not finding the holes. Johnson looks like our better RB right now.

Not really true. I mean, they showed clips from the Florida game where Durham took himself out of the play often. I'm in favor of JJ right now. Get him lathered up.

So what happens to LSU RBs between Freshman and Sophomore years?

This is what Clemson did.
We can do screens all day and win that way
