Earlier this week hundreds of dead bull reds wash up on the Grand Isle beach, check out the Facebook page of this guy linked below. He videos the entire beach and takes over 100 photos of individual dead fish. The GI fishermen reported seeing "thousands" of dead bull reds in the water on monday/tuesday. The menhaden boats had been working "right on the beach" of grand isle for the last few days.

Please call your state rep or senator to report this and tell them you've had enough of the pogey boats and something needs to be done, either increasing the buffer to 1 mile from shore or more, reducing their allowable catch from unlimited to half of what they usually harvest, or even ask to have them banned completely. Even you guys who only hunt, its really important that all corners of Louisiana fight these foreign companies strip mining our coastal resources, please call your rep. A couple of weeks ago they killed tarpon as bycatch near chandeleur island.

Truly a shame.

Unfortunately we have DWF leadership that is barely above your local DMV. We have a governor who is no different than every other good ol-boy pocket greaser in this states history and a morbidly obese LT Gov who has been in State politics for 40 years yet blames everyone else for the shortcomings.

Oh what Louisiana could be……..

They’ve definitely killed more than one. Theres MS charter Capts that have documented lines of dead tarpon and bull reds left by the pogey boats.

The menhaden Industry will justify this by saying the $1M LGL study authorized by LA Legislature and paid for with our Artificial Reef Funds shows these results:

From 2015-2024 the pogey boats accounted for 9.9% of total redfish removal

The recreational harvest (78.9%) & recreational dead discards (11.2%) accounted for the other 90.1%

Even if this is accurate the question not answered is now we know the recreational removal of spawners will be close to 11% (some releases will not survive) since its illegal to keep any bulls.

What is the % of the critical SPAWNING redfish removed from the population by pogey boats?

It will be close to 89%. What will the overall impact be? Time will tell.

If we had a functioning state government and department of wildlife and fisheries that would take more interest in issues like this over writing dumb tickets on TV we'd be unstoppable.

Absolute bullshite that pogey boats are getting away with killing 10% of the annual redfish take.

Louisiana doesn't publish the total number of fishing licenses sold each year, but using the data they put out in 2020 about year over year increases in fishing licenses sold in April and May during covid, I would say the number is in the 500,000 range for total number of fishing licenses sold each year.

So 2 companies are getting away with killing the same number of redfish as around 50,000 to 60,000 recreational anglers. I would venture to say that the money spent by recreational anglers on boats, tackle, bait, launch fees, lodging, charter guides, and attracting out of state anglers provides FAR more economic benefit to Louisiana than whatever the state makes off allowing the pogey boat industry to operate here.

Got the following email earlier this month with a link to petition

quote:

We are asking for all staff (and your families), vendors, and partners to sign the petition below in support of the Menhaden Industry. This petition will ask regulators to defend and protect the Menhaden Industry against various campaigns which misrepresent the science behind our industry.

I hope more & more fishermen post pics

You don't need any lobbyist when the positions are appointed. It comes right down to the Governor (coon arse putz Landry) and the Chairman of the LDWF, Kevin Sagrera. It will never happen as long as these two remain decision makers.

The only possibility we have would be pressure from the current presidential administration.

this. Trump has made a statement on it, but Landry has avoided it like the plague.

Theirs and most of the other "seafood" lobbyist are some of the strongest in the state, far more power and $$$ than anything CCA can throw at them unfortunately.

People need to reach out to Donald Trump Jr if this is going to be taken care of. Outside of his influence it will continue. He was quietly instrumental in getting them out of the Atlantic.

Not even domestically owned entities either. They keep touting economic benefit to the area and jobs for locals but it seems like most of their crew arent local except for a few of the Capts who could likely get a similarly positioned job with one of the many tug or oilfield service companies.

Just bumping this to ask everyone again to contact your state rep and senator to ask them to do something about the pogey boats - push them back 3 miles, limit their catch, or even completely ban them. Ask them to take some action.

I heard from my local rep that this was a hot topic this week in BR with people calling. If you havent called your rep please do so, its very impactful and its what is needed to have the legislature take action.

I would ove to have any proof, not assumptions, that this fish kill was related to the pogey industry. Please provide me some.

A fish kill due to water conditions would contain many other species of fish.

Pogie boats fish this area almost daily. You can track the boats online.

Burn the mfers to the ground. Gaia will protect you. The most ridiculous industry in the world. It’s makes a few million as causes 100s of millions in damage, Only Louisiana and Mississippi are fricking dumb enough or corrupt enough to allow them and that’s really Pascagoula a little town so corrupt it’s got a permanent FBI office.

CCA and all the conservation groups need to sue the mfers into oblivion. Make sure this information gets to the Trump admin since they are thinking about shutting them down. They are as bad as the gill netters snd if you are in this industry you are almost certainly a pos and probably have a criminal record
