Are bike lane created because there is a real demand or need for them?

Or is it a ‘If you build it they will come’ scenario? Or is it virtue signaling?

A road near me was widened to 4 lanes years ago. The government used eminent domain to take away parts of people’s yards and create bike lanes on either side of the new, widened ROW.

In that case they built it and no one came. I have never seen bicycles using the lanes. 90% of the time I never see bicycles in any of the bike lanes near where I live.

And yet, there is this push to add bike lanes to streets and roads.

Have you ever seen anybody actually biking in a bike lane I don't even know what city you live in?

They are used all the time in big cities. The problem is the smaller cities that aren't pedestrian friendly that try to force it. See Government St in BR

I would rather a bike lane than they ride in the lane of traffic.

Biker douches typically don’t bike in the bike lane. I like them for my runs.

Could count on the times on 2 hands over the years.

The same project above took people’s yards for extra wide sidewalks that also never get used from what I have seen, but that is another topic.

100%

Fine with an unused bike lane if it means they won't hold up traffic.

People bitching about a solution to a problem they bitched about.

People will do whatever is easiest. If there’s a robust network of bike lanes and you’re protected from cars then people will use it. It’s difficult to create a network with just a little piecemeal approach, so you end up with tiny unused sections that go nowhere.

The big problem many of these places have is it's so sporadic that it's not that useful. Yeah Government st has it, but what about getting back and forth to Government st to use them? There's a lot of roads people don't want to bicycle down because of traffic and such.

The city I'm in now has ~130 miles of bike trails plus bike lanes in places. They get pretty well used.

That's extra roadway that could be utilized for drunks and people texting and driving.

None of the above, it was government mandated. Look up term “complete streets”. The wiki page has a decent synopsis. The goal is to make streets safe and efficient to be use by everyone in all modes of transportation. By everyone that means all ages and abilities.

Louisiana started with then DOTD secretary Shawn Wilson and JBE mandated complete streets on all state projects and those receiving state funding. There maybe something similar with federal funding, I’m not sure.

Bike lanes are useless if they aren't maintained

Most Bike lanes are full of debris, trash, gravel and other undesirable elements for bikers that will puncture tires

My last 3 flats when out riding have come in bike lanes

the bike lanes in Beijing are as wide as the road for cars. it was seriously terrifying riding a bike around there in the morning and not because of the cars

If it's just a stripe between traffic and the bike lane then your avg person won't use it. You need a curb to not only make people feel more safe but also keep all the debris off the path. I ride a couple of bike paths 3 or 4 days a week and they are full of glass, nails and other metal debris that will puncture a tire quick. I have slime in my tube's that helps but I'll get a flat every few months.
