Have these places completely lost their minds?

There’s a grand total of 2 courses remotely close to Baton Rouge worth around 100.00 to play, BRCC and CCL. An argument could be made for Uclub, and Carter is on the cusp of being worth that. But 125 for PP and 80 for Copper is crazy. Am I wrong? What am I missing here with these courses?

If people are paying it, then that’s the fee. Demand will sort everything out.
But it does cost a pretty penny to keep courses in great condition.

The Copper Card at Copper Mill makes it worth it. $99 and your first round is paid for along with a hat. Then those weekend $79 rounds are $54 rounds. If you play Copper twice a year, you've still made your money back and have a hat to show for it.

I don't know what Pelican charges these days, as I'm just a Lakes member. But $125 seems high, even with the new greens and bunkers.

I get it’s costly to maintain a golf course but having played golf in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Arizona… you can play some absolutely pristine tracks for 65.00

Would you mind sharing some of these courses? Not that I doubt you, but there has to be some extra revenue for some of these places to stay alive.

Buy the Copper Card. Worth every penny.

As far as Pelican goes I wasn’t aware that was the new fees. That’s pretty much double the price of Greystones weekend fees are

Covid changed golf.

Rounds played went up, and the surprising thing to me is that demand has stayed up.

Getting a tee time pre-Covid was easy.

I am assuming these courses are not in Houston. It is a rarity to find a nicer (by nicer, I just mean not a goat ranch) course that is sub $100 on the weekend. There is one course within 30 miles of my house in Cypress that is decent and below $100, and I am worried that those days are numbered. It was just purchased and they are already redoing the practice green. Maybe I am wrong, and someone can point out some other sub $100 courses out here other than the following:

Gus Wortham (muni, so not privately owned looking to make a profit)
Memorial (if you have a Houston address)
Gleannloch Pines

Is it crazy, yes.

But you have to remember guest rounds at BRCC, CCL, and UC are heavily subsidized by member dues.

But again yes it is a joke that it’s $25 more to play as a guest at BRCC on a Saturday than it is to play PP.

CM member here. Honestly didn’t know this was the rate. The course really is in good shape right now, but it’s not an $80 track.
As others have mentioned, the copper card is the way to go. It pays for itself with two rounds.
It’s also a savvy way for the club to drum up repeat business.

Yes, BUT buy it in the beginning of the year. It's only valid for the calendar year, not a year from purchase.

Pelican with the new renovations is indeed $125 for a non-member playing with other non-members, $90 paying with a member.
To me about $80-$90 seems fair due to course renovations and good clubhouse. Even prior to the renovations I always thought PP was about $10-$15 overpriced.

Here's the frustrating part, conditions stayed the same (actually got worse because increased play)

Unfilled divots and unrepaired pitch marks have definitely increased.

I played in a tournament this weekend. Guy they paired me with did not make a par in 36 holes. Nice enough guy, but just not ready to play it down for 2 rounds.

The front 9 took 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Of course, they put us on the clock. I’m not great, but I don’t play slow. At some point, IF they are going to let anybody enter, they probably need a max score of net double or something.

I think there are more raw golfers playing than ever. It is a hard game. I think the pro shops need to either give a skills test before people play on the course or at least define a max score and time per hole.

As far as events, rate players as scramble only, shamble able, stableford net double max, medal proper tee.

All that said, I can’t see demand subsiding ever.

Playing golf is one of my favorite things in the world to do, but that sounds awful. That is 22 minutes per hole.

I get cranky if an entire round takes 3:15.

I thought we were being pranked, but it was real.

I’m not sure the guy understood what he signed up for.

With so many new players since Covid, there probably needs to be a system for rating ability to play in events.

Something like:
Above 36: no events/no morning tee times
27-35: can play in 4 man scramble
18-26: can play in a shamble(net double max)
10-17: can play in stableford(net double max)
Plus to 9: may sign up for medal play from proper tee.

So an 11 index could play in a scramble, shamble, or stableford.

A 3 index could play in anything.

A 22 could do a scramble or shamble format.
