The bulk of the objection was he ruined people’s lives by accusing them of being communists.

This isn’t a modern day pogrom we run here. We are civilized in America. Law and justice. This is how we got intelligence on Bin Ladne and the Somali Pirates and Hussein. The US has more operatives in its ranks than any other nation. There’s no reason they can’t snuff out the bad actors and not make “collateral damage” out of the unaffiliated.

My thought has been that McCarthy was conceptually right that communists were in our country intent on bad things. The push back was that the investigative methods of the committee may not have been good as they apparently missed on a lot of people that weren’t communist and basically ruined them.

The thing that brought him down was gay jewish lawyer (and Trump mentor) Roy Cohn wanted his boyfriend to get a military promotion. When he couldn't, Roy threatened the brass that he'd start a McCarthy investigation on them. They said go for it.
Not a single one was a communist and McCarthy, not Cohn, was discredited because of it, even though he was right about everyone else he investigated.
Some say Cohn was a poison pill and did it on purpose. Either way, he's the reason Tailgunner Joe was politically ruined.
