Are you able to freely speak at family gatherings?

Sometimes I have a huge desire to call out specific people for their behavior. My family is generally accepting with a few “wow can’t believe he said that” but we all know they agree… however my family is relatively homogenous so our opinions don’t vary much.
How about baws with diverse families? (social/economic/ etc.)

Learn to think and ask yourself if it is worth talking about or to them? If not, then it is best to leave them to their stupidity.

Freedom, yes. Desire? No.
Not worth it. I just smile, hug my family members, pour a drink and talk sports.
ETA:
And we're a huge Catholic family with all sorts of people. Coonass Cousin Eddies that need a reality show and purple hair liberal baristas and everything in between. We'll have a neurosurgeon talking to a guy who cleans boats for a living about God knows what. Something like 70 cousins/spouses/kids.
It's quite lively at our family Christmas in New Orleans.

Pretty much. My cousin with all the piercings is the only one who gets offended or worked up.

Personally have no experience with contagious family members. Do you make em a separate plate and table on the side?

As long as my two retarded liberal gay/queer/tranny whatever the frick they call themselves cousins aren't within listening distance. Otherwise it's best to just avoid conversation of any kind around them.
They usually don't even come in for family gatherings for the most part because of the arguments that they start, and 99% of the family is usually ok with that
We love them because they're family, but holy hell they're a pain in the arse.

My ex-SIL and her husband (The Woodlands, so you probably know where this is going) are allowed to say whatever they want when opening Christmas presents. The conservatives (everyone else) never started anything about politics, it was always them. I tried not to engage, because I bring sauces and tend to wreck them, especially when SIL is going off on some drunken rant about male circumcision, etc.

Yep, almost exactly. Not everyone gets a hug...

I generally stay out of political/religious discussions in general, whether family or public.

This
Politics and other shite isn't worth ruining family relationships over.
There is an unspoken understanding in my family, although many have strong opinions, politics and religion is rarely if ever brought up at family gatherings.

I speak freely with my Mom and Brother but I'm not close enough --like with good friends -- with the other family to care too much about their opinions on politics, religion etc.
I do have one "TD Poliboard type Uncle" who really punishes. On the bright side, he makes everyone ready to leave most get-togethers early and not linger.

Yeah, but I reserve certain topics for like minded family members. It's not like I'm going to be able to change anyone's mind about politics or whatever, so why even bring it up?

Hell no. We all tip toe around the liberal niece who will lose her sh$t if anyone disagrees with her.

Not out loud in front of everyone. I have one far left sister who is pretty levelheaded, but her not her husband. I'd rather have a relationship with her than have him cut her off from us. He runs his mouth everyone once in a while but everyone ignores him.

I’m pretty conservative, but my dad is so conservative that we don’t bring up politics at family gatherings very often. No need to hear him repeat the 16 hours of talk radio and Fox News he listened to that day.
Unless of course we all are just dying to see what new borderline or outright offensive tshirts he’s screen printed recently.
