Will Trevor Lawrence ever live up to the hype?

Trevor Lawrence has run out of excuses. Throughout his five years in the NFL there have been myriad justifications why Lawrence has struggled to live up to the unbelievable hype he entered the league with. Bad coaching, questionable weapons, mediocre blocking — all have been factors in why Lawrence hasn’t met expectations since being the No. 1 overall pick in 2021. The Jaguars have slowly but surely addressed these problems, but they’re still losing, and the constant has been Trevor Lawrence.
There’s too much binary analysis of NFL quarterbacks in football discourse. Everyone is either “garbage” or “GOAT” with no room for nuance in the middle. It’s this grey area which Lawrence finds himself. He’s not a bad quarterback, but he isn’t a special one either. Much like the team he’s on: Trevor Lawrence is a JAG.

What is Trevor Lawrence?
We’re in the midst of year five now. The odds that Lawrence will magically put it all together and become the player people hoped for have evaporated. He is not a bad quarterback, and certainly one Jacksonville can win games with — but he’s never going to be a Top 5 quarterback or potentially even Top 10.
There’s just too much inconsistency when the throws matter. While he’ll make the majority of passes an NFL quarterback should make, he doesn’t make the plays on the great ones are capable of. This puts a hard ceiling on what the Jaguars can achieve with Lawrence at QB. At this point he’s much closer to Blake Bortles than Patrick Mahomes.
The part of this pill that’s hard to swallow is the contract. Jacksonville was so intent on the belief that he was “the guy” that they signed him to a 5-year, $275M extension in 2024 — with $200M of his contract guaranteed. Lawrence is tied for second among NFL quarterbacks in yearly average, but he’s surrounded by guys who are infinitely better than him: Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Jordan Love.

I have said since his time at Clemson. He has incredible natural ability, I dont believe he has the desire in him to be great. His faith might be part of that reason.
He made 2 or 3 bad throws yesterday. But at the end the game he made a throw in the EZ that was beautiful and the WR just dropped it and on 4th down the Throw to Thomas was a 1st down and would have iced the game.

Completely agree
BTJ is turning into an issue for the Jags. He looked like a guy that just didn't want to get touched yesterday

I watched Trevor in person in high school and it was honestly unbelievable how natural he looked. He arguably looks worse now than he did then mechanically. It’s a shame. I think the bad coaching in Jacksonville might have just broken him.

I kind of feel bad for dudes like Lawrence...well...relative considering he makes tens of millions per year.
But he doesn't seem like a dude who went out and promoted himself or asked for all this hype. Just so many in the media promoted him as this generational talent on the level of a Rodgers, Elway, Marino, etc. A first round pick Montana.
There are some players who aid in the promoting of themselves as such a player (Ryan Leaf, Caleb Williams), and when they can't live up to the hype, then that's partially on them for the negativity. I don't see Trevor Lawrence in that way. Dude's just out there playing football, with his beautiful long hair that's perfectly kept up, and had a really good career at Clemson.

Odds were against him when he was drafted by Jacksonville

Yes, when he leaves that dumpster fire of an organization or they relocate to London.

I mean his hype was being the next Elway or P. Manning. That’s pretty insane hype to have to live up to.
It’s pretty unlikely he’ll ever turn into a legendary QB but I can still see him being a decent one

I called his career arch before he ever played an NFL snap. If you go back and watch his Clemson tape, the scheme always had guys running wide open, and the rushing comparison jumping from college to NFL is not even close unless you're so good at like Lamar or so aware of where the openings against the blitz will be like Mahomes.
He has all-pro traits, but has never been an all-pro QB.

No. The hype was too great to begin with. Very few guys in history had the scouting report coming out of college he did. Montana, Elway, Manning, Ryan, and Luck, that's about it.
I personally thought he was going to be a stud, but I think the article in the OP hit the nail on the head pretty good. He is a decent QB, but looks like he'll never be top 10 and he's extremely overpaid.

Montana was a 3rd round pick.

I think he'll be pretty consistent in the Top Half of NFL starters (Top 16), and may creep into Top 10 some seasons in stents.
Put him on that NY Giants franchise that beat the Patriots in two Super Bowls, and he accomplishes what Eli Manning accomplished. Don't expect him to turn your franchise around like P. Manning, Burrow, J. Allen.

Yea don't know why I put Montana in there. Jim Kelly would fit in that group better.
Yea middle of the pack seems right. Probably turn into a journeyman or play for a few teams and have some decent years like Carson Palmer. But nothing close to the hype, which would be top 3 QB for a decade.
Meh. I'm by no means a Eli Manning stan, but he was slinging it pretty good there for a while. I think he started out pretty overrated but midway in his career he was pretty underrated actually. Dude threw for 4k yards seven times. Lawrence did have a solid sophomore season but certainly hasn't improved on that at all.

You do realize they’re building a new stadium in Jacksonville right? They’re locked in until 2058.

He has been living off of his high school recruiting ranking and one game against Alabama when he threw a bunch of jump balls to tall WRs for about 7 years now.
Most overrated player in the league by a mile.

He was prett damn good in college after that ALabama game. His first loss as a starter was the national title game in 2019 against an all-time great team. His next and only other loss in his career was the national title game the following year (he was hurt in their loss to ND that year and didn't play)
I think it's pretty unfair to say he's lived off his high school recruiting ranking and one game his freshman season when he went 38-2 as a starter in college with both losses coming in the national title game. His numbers in college also supported him being good
