Exodus, a 65 year old movie that can explain the Gaza progress

Most TD'ers were not born in 1960 when Exodus as a 3 1/2 hour movie was released featuring Paul Newman and Eve Marie Saint. Theme is set in 1948 as the Jewish Nation is established.
The Brits in charge of the partition come across as beuracrats with no purpose. other than to stymie the jews. The Grand Mufti issue a directive to murder 300 children at a jewish settlement. And there is a German representative that wants to kill the jews also.
There has been no progress in the last 65 years toward developing a social structure that has the various ethnic groups working better together. Only the weapons have shown any advancement in capabilities.
Folks spewing jew hate really demonstrate lack of understanding, or are just evil people.

Read Exodus and then read The Haj (and then read every other Leon Uris book you can get your hands on). Historical fiction that provides some context to the region's struggles. I read these in my formative years, and they helped shape my world view. Exodus is an account of the birth of modern Israel from the Jewish (and specifically Zionist) perspective whereas The Haj, written more than 25 years after Exodus, is his attempt to write on the same topic from the Palestinian perspective.
One does have to realize there is a pro-Israel slant from Uris who was a Baltimore Russian jew who enlisted in the USMC after Pearl Harbor and fought in the pacific in WWII. Both are easy reads and though there is unquestionably some bias, his books are meticulously researched and entertaining.

As a rule, I favor the Jewish position to the Arab position in the historical narrative of Palestine, but brother, read a book. Citing to a movie as non-fiction is… a choice

Isaac and Ishmael story It boils down to one thing. You either believe the Bible or you don’t. Period.
Bible says the Jews would be scattered and then brought back to the land GOD gave to them. That is Israel, and happened in 1948.
If you do not believe in the Bible, then you don’t believe it belongs to them.
(Furthermore, the roots of this go all the way back to Isaac and Ishmael. But only if you believe the Bible)

This is objectively false. I do not believe that the Bible is the divinely inspired word of Yahweh, yet I believe the modern state of Israel has as good or better claim as anyone else on the land they currently control.

yes it is a choice, so few people take the time to understand history and context. Eve Marie Saint and Paul Newman are such good actors that a few more folks may be drawn in to the culture

I have had that same stance, and a good part of it goes back to reading Exodus and The Haj as a college kid. One argument in favor of this point of view is that they (I use they for modern Israel) have been better stewards of the land, basically reclaiming desert with establishment of kibbutzim and modern water management systems to be productive and move toward being self sufficient whereas the largely nomadic population that was absorbed essentially existed as nomadic shepherds and merchants. Perhaps this idea or point of view can be cast as racist or perhaps Westernist (if that is even a term, lol), but I feel it is one of the more pragmatic ways of looking at the situation.

I read “The Haj” while de-loved to the Middle East in the build up to desert storm. I’ve not thought about that book in a long time but enjoyed reading it. I need to read it again.

I replied that a disbelief in the Bible, per se, is not sufficient to disbelieve that the modern Israeli state is illegitimate in its geographic holdings.

Very interesting topic. Obviously in 1948 Everyone knew what the bible prophesied for the future of the Jews. Knowing that, is there any chance Jews and Christians (Balfour declaration etc), might have helped push the event (Jews return) for the sake of expediating biblical prophecy ? Its an honest question from a religious person (myself). Something i have often wondered

The Haj, It was a good read many years ago explaining the departure of Arabs from Israel where they had a solid life. Forced by the Muslim elite to relocate to an unsustainable camps with no material support, up sprung the Palestinian issue.
I had to go to Wikipedia for remembrance and boy is wiki anti Israel. They should know better and thus must classified as evil.
