What to tell kids when it’s time to put their dog down?

I’ve had my dog for 15 years and she’s struggling. I’m taking her to the vet tomorrow to discuss the end of her life. I kind of want to lie to the kids and tell them the vet asked to keep her or something when it’s ultimately time for her to go to sleep. Idk how to handle this. Kids are in elementary school.

Just be up front with them. They have to learn about this at some point and they're old enough to know a 15 year old dog isn't long for this world.

sorry man. I wish I could give you an easy answer.
probably just tell them the truth, in a gentle way. give them some time with the dog if possible. its not easy, but I dont think lying about something like this is a great idea.
sorry for your loss man, good luck.

Yea, I’d just be honest and explain the situation. It’ll be tough but kids catch on to things like that fairly well. I would definitely not try to beat around the bush.

We just put our 14 year old dog down, daughters 9 boys 5, we told them hey tomorrow Bella will not be with us anymore she’s going to heaven.

Definitely lie to them and tell them your vet has a farm you let them take it there to live forever

Tell them that unfortunately dogs only can live 15 or 20 years. People can and ordinarily do live much longer. Make it a math illustration. Blame it on God. HE designed the whole system.
It sucks to lose a good dog.
Sorry this is happening to y’all.

Be gentle, honest and let them know all dogs (excepting pibbles) go to heaven.
Learning about loss is actually a key development of childhood- it's rough, but necessary.
I'm sorry about your puppy, Cubbies.

How did they take it? My kids are 6 and 8 and are extremely sensitive.

Basically what everyone else has stated. Tough times, no doubt. Went through that 5 years ago last month with a 15-yo golden (Goat, btw). Waited 4+ years to get another dog and it was far too long. Should have got another much sooner. Didn't realize how much we missed a pup until we got another. I'd have 2, if not 3, if it were up to me. Wife (no pics) disagrees, so 1 it is.

Don't lie to your kids. Sadly this is a natural course for a loving pet. Great opportunity to teach them gratefulness and loss.

They cried that morning, had a hard day at school, and now we get the occasional I miss Bella and it’s weird not having her laying where she normally was

How old are the kids? We told ours, had a good cry, then gave our girl the best week of her life.
Sorry you have to go through it either way. Sucks for mom and dad as much as the kids. Maybe more.
