US test scores hit damning new lows in math and reading

The writing’s on the wall — if you can read it.
Sobering national test results show more high school seniors are struggling with math and reading than at any point in recent decades, with Education Secretary Linda McMahon calling out a “devastating trend” Tuesday.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) — commonly referred to as the Nation’s Report Card — showed just 35% of high school seniors were proficient in reading, the lowest score since the assessment began in 1992.
“These results are sobering,” National Center for Education Statistics Acting Commissioner Matthew Soldner said in a statement. “The drop in overall scores coincides with significant declines in achievement among our lowest-performing students, continuing a downward trend that began even before the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“Among our nation’s high school seniors, we’re now seeing a larger percentage of students scoring below the NAEP Basic achievement level in mathematics and reading than in any previous assessment.”

But... Department of Education
Posted on 9/10/25 at 9:05 am to Jbird
Blow up the department of Ed. Give it back to the states. Allow teachers to teach information not to test and allow states and districts to removed high school students who have no interest in being educated or calmly being in a school environment.
Let me be king of education and I would fix this in a month.

Politicians could not be happier. An ignorant society will make it so much easier for politicians to rape and pillage it.

I listened to NPR do a big piece on this yesterday...
"In the wake of drastic cuts to education by the Trump Administration, students fall further behind with new lows in scores..."
I shite you not.
Zero discussion about when the teachers unions told the CDC to shut down the schools.

Part of the reason we are considering home schooling/private tutoring. My kids will never step foot in a public school if I can help it

Have we tried throwing more money at it?

My wife is a teacher and as much as I want to blame this on the commies, the real culprit is George W Bush. No child left behind is a fricking abortion of a law that ensures that teachers have to teach to the lowest common denominator. It is practically impossible to fail a kid now and they are putting autistic kids, behavior issue kids and fricking illegal immigrants who speak absolutely no English into classrooms with regular kids.

Well as if our education system wasn't already struggling under the weight of horrible priorities we decided to come pound that problem for almost two straight years by basically shutting down the schools and pretending remote education was going to work. And everybody stuck their heads up their asses ignoring the fact that the students that would be the worst affected would be the ones that could afford it the least. I mean my children had the benefit of a father who could help them all the way through calculus. And had the time to do so. But what about the fifth grader with a single mom who worked full-time and didn't graduate high school?
It's kind of sad that we as Americans have already basically forgotten that our educators cheered that shite on! And they swore to us that single mom McDonald's burger flipper overseeing daily efforts was just as good as being in a classroom with a teacher

It seems to me that the problem is that the lowest scorers keep getting lower and maybe I miss reading the quote. Could it be that our inner cities are collapsing and more immigrants and children of immigrants are in our schools?

I would hate to see the inner city illegal population in school. We live in an affluent area an hour from a city and my wife has had 3-5 illegals in her classroom each year for the last 5 years. They literally sit in the corner and are "immersed" in English. They interact with no one, can't communicate with the teacher, and participate in no tests / assignments. All are passed on to the next grade at the end of the year.

We keep lowering the bar so certain groups can pass more easily and it only retards everyone.

City near me, school district has 28 different languages spoken in the system.
They will not hire a teacher no matter the credentials unless they speak at least two languages.
Your resume get shite canned if you aren't bilingual.
Teacher of the year? No hire.

Mississippi and Louisiana scores went up.
SEC schools are becoming the "top choice colleges" that the Northeastern elites used to be.
Education in the South is on the rise.
