A North Carolina family claims their child's day care didn't call 911 when the boy was bit by a copperhead on the playground.
The New Beginnings Child Enrichment Center in Stony Point said the child was bitten on the playground, and a worker killed the copperhead. Local news outlets in Charlotte reached out to emergency services in Alexander County, who confirmed they never received a 911 call from the day care.
Family members said the child’s guardian was the one who rushed the boy to the hospital, sharing a photo of the 4-year-old’s swollen hand after they said he was bitten near his ring finger.
Family members said the 4-year old was playing near a sandbox when he was bitten by the snake.
Local news outlets asked the day care if they alerted other parents about the incident, but the day care declined to comment.

Brook Cooper, the boy's aunt, said his guardian was initially told the child had a splinter or possibly broke his hand, but the information changed when the guardian arrived at the daycare.
"The director got up and said he got [a] snake bite," Cooper said. "My first thought was, why didn’t they call 911? My second thing was, do the other parents even know?"

In a statement, Robinson said the "safety and well-being" of every child is their priority and the 4-year-old boy received “timely treatment.”
“We want our families and community to know that this situation was handled quickly, responsibly, and with the child’s care at the center of every decision,” Robinson wrote. “We are also taking added steps with local professionals to further ensure the safety of our outdoor spaces. We are grateful the child is recovering and deeply appreciate the trust families place in us every day.”

How do idiot Karen’s sit around working at a daycare and know the kid is bitten by a snake (priority 1: identify the animal), kill a copperhead (who doesn’t know they’re venomous?), his hand is swollen (more evidence) and not alert EMS?

Probably worried they would get in trouble for calling 911 over a nothing garter snake bite because they were too dumb to identify a copperhead... which is actually pretty easy.

That daycare’s insurance carrier is about to go out of business.

No random stranger is going to give your child the proper love and attention that you would, and especially not some random stranger tasked with watching about 20 of them at once.
Really good daycares are prohibitively expensive for most families, so a lot of shady "affordable" daycares are lurking out there. They are affordable in part because they hire trash so they can pay them poorly.
These shady daycares are also are run by people whose natural instinct is to cover up bad things if they occur.
2 parents both working with nobody to watch the kids was never how it was supposed to be and the fact that's become the norm has lead to a ton of other major problems downstream.

I normally don't like how sue happy our society is but that is outrageous. Couldn't the kid possibly lose a finger from a copperhead bite?

If you have to get bitten by a venomous snake in the U.S., a copperhead is the snake of choice. They are generally less severe than other pit vipers, but you can still get significant necrosis. My buddy got tagged by a copperhead last year and didn’t seek treatment - his hand was swollen for about 36 hours but no lingering effects (as opposed to 88 vials of antivenin for his Eastern diamondback bite, with some lingering nerve damage in his leg). Another friend got tagged by one a few months ago, ended up in the hospital for antivenin, then had an allergic reaction to it. Consequences may vary.

Local news probably wants this story to blow up. I’m not fooled.

My sister got her thumb nearly ripped off when it got caught in a fire door latch, and the kid on the inside kept pulling on it to latch it in the 80s. The place didn't call an ambulance until they got in touch with my mom, on duty at a Navy base. For hours. This was in the 80s. She didn't lose the thumb, but the stupidity was palpable.

So should it be called 'Day-Don't Care' ?

I have to actively hide these days care horror stories from my wife

A four year old who is crying hysterically tells the adult supervision that he hurt his finger. They try to calm him down. Boy doesn’t calm down and can’t explain why his finger and hand are hurting. Reasonable adult calls parent and offers a plausible option for what happened, because in their experience, splinters and bone breaks are common playground injuries. No kids report seeing the snake. Parent begins route to daycare. Kids come back inside from recess time. Custodian goes outside to clean up trash. Custodian sees and kills snake, asks to speak to director who isn’t available at the moment because he is meeting with the parents of an injured boy. Custodian informs assistant director that he killed a copperhead and it could be related. Assistant director tells director, who tells parents.

Yeah, I'm not sure the risk of a reaction to CroFab or Anavip is worth it for a copperhead bite. I'd probably try to ride it out, too.

Why TF would/should the daycare “alert other parents about the incident”?
The snake was killed (as in “dead”) and posed no threat to anyone. All that would have done was to cause deranged parents to rush to the daycare and take their children out. (And you know it would have happened). I would have liked to hear some of the excuses given by those parents. There was no longer any threat.

This is gross negligence.
Obviously they were more worried about how this would affect their business than the child's health.
