Tractor size recommendation. UPDATE

FIL is buying some property in MS. Deal was if he bought the property I’d buy the tractor for there and our lease. He’s buying 45 acres, Mostly wooded, trails and 4acre pasture need a lot of work. Mostly grass cutting, clearing pines and discing. Lease is 350 acres with 5 food plots, none bigger than 4 acres. I’ve settled on a Deere or Kubota since those 2 dealerships are 10mins away from property. Was looking at tractors in the 39HP range with 30 at the PTO but everyone I know with tractors is recommending at least a 45-50. The 48/49 have about 40 at the PTO. Looking for advice. Thanks in advance.

I've never been upset that I had too much tractor for something. It really sucks when I have had to drive 30 miles to borrow a larger tractor to do 1 damn task at the camp (and that's if you know someone that will let you even use their larger tractor)..

Get the bigger tractor.

The best advice I can give is get the largest hp your budget can handle and you'll still wish you had more.

I had a similar thread the other day and the recommendation I got was at least a 40hp tractor with a FEL, 4wd, and a cab.
My budget can’t really handle that, but that was the recommendation

40 HP at the PTO minimum. More is you can afford it.

I have a Kubota L3902 that I use to maintain my mostly wooded 10 acre property and the roads at my deer leases. I like it a lot, but if I had multiple several-acre pastures or food plots, I'd want something big enough to pull a batwing.

I have had 7 trouble free years with my Kubota L4701 HST. Has right at 40 hp at the pto and frame size is small enough to get into the woods also don’t need a deck over trailer to haul it.

This is often overlooked. Guy down the road bought a "bigger is better" cab Kubota and is always damaging the cab/glass trying to fit in the woods. I have a L2501 and love it in the woods, but I would love 10-15 more HP and lifting capacity time to time. HP and size wise I'd vote for the 4701.

Dad has a 4701. Great for the woods and plots.
If you have 5 - 4 acre plots and you're cutting and pulling discs, I would probably want more.
I have a MX6000 and wouldn't want less if I was cutting discing close to 20 acres.

Thanks everyone. I’ve been eyeing the Kubota L4802 vs the MX4900. The mx is a little more money but has more lift capacity, heavier frame and axles, and telescoping arms on the 3 pt hitch.
Dave, do you like the MX6000?

I was going with a 39 Kubota but got sold on the L3560 HST because of the comfort features & my bad back. I have 18 acres, with 4 or 5 freshly cleared that I had to disc into shape. Also did a lot of work in the woods for bike trails. Lots of bucket work building a 1/2 mile motocross track too.
I wouldn’t want anything less than what I have, but if you’ll be working in the woods I also wouldn’t want anything bigger. I’ve damaged every implement I own maneuvering through the woods.
I’ve taken down lots of mid-sized pines & some decent sized stumps with a little work with mine. I’ve cleared a couple acres of lightly wooded/heavy brush with my bucket, a bucket rake & bush hog. I think it’s the perfect size and I definitely recommend an L series (and hydrostatic). Zero regrets buying Kubota.
ETA: if you’ll can get more hp on the same size frame, then by all means get as much hp as you can afford. I’m not sure on the Kubotas at what hp they move to a bigger overall tractor.

I have a L3901 that I maintain 13 acres with. It is a great tractor and gets alot of work done. Biggest constraint with it is the lifting capacity of the FEL. To me, tractors point of diminishing return is how much time do you have to complete a task. Will the 3901 cut the same amount of grass with a 5' shredder as the MX6000 will with a 7'? Yes but it will take you longer. Weigh how much time you spend in the seat of the tractor a year and figure if the extra money Is worth your time. Keep in mind a bigger tractor means bigger and more expensive implements trailers etc.

How many hours do you put on a tractor in a year on 13 acres?

I like it.
I have 20+ acres of pasture and cut most of it with the MX. Its a cab model, I dont take it in the woods much.
I mostly use a 6' bush hog or 8' flail mower. The 4701 will probably run both of those.
A big difference is the loader. The MX feels a lot stronger.
I have a L2800 and the 4701 loader is closer to that than the 6000.
Im generally happy with my MX6000. The worst thing is that cutting tall grass will clog up the a/c condenser. You have to stop and blow it out every 20 minutes if its a hot, dry day. You'll bake in the cab if it's not done. Terrible design. I have a piece of sunbrella cloth over the front of the tractor to prevent grass and seed from getting in.

Do not buy a JD. Any work on those has to be done by dealer due to JD software. Buy Kubota or LS.

My tractor is a 2021 and it has 672 hours.

Agreed; I have a Mahindra 3316 and is a little beast BUT getting parts is hit and miss. Kubota has greater dealer / parts support.

“ telescoping arms on the 3 pt hitch”
That would be worth the extra money if you can afford it.Makes it much easier to hookup implements.

When I went to replace my L3600, I was looking at the L4701 or MX5400 and leaning towards the 5400. Salesman directed me to the M5660 which came with rear remotes. By the time I added rear remotes and third function I was within a few hundred dollars of a similar setup between the MX and M series. No regrets opting for the larger tractor.

I have 130 acres maybe 4-5 acres of which is cleared betweeen the two plots, roads and barn area. I have only put 220 hours on mine in 7 years for reference now that said I should definitely be putting more seat time to keep the place in tip top shape but just don’t get to spend more than 5-6 hours a month doing maintenance.
