Catches aren't THAT impressive

Most of you who grew up after 1995 don't realize there was a very long time when college and pro football players like RBs, TEs, WRs especially; they didn't wear gloves. TV and the media love to romanticize catches nowadays. I don't doubt for 1 second the acrobatics r and coordination required to make some of these crazy plays. Where do you draw the line being in-awe vs. that's overrated bcuz such n such made the grab solely bcuz they were wearing gloves? ?? ??

You think a glove allows someone to be running full speed, leap high into the air, and have the body control to locate and hang onto a football?

When I watch a catch and say "Damn, that was a nice catch". That's where the line is.

Yeah, I remember when the ball was made of real pigskin that was slicky.... kids today catch computer generated, grippy type of synthetic material that makes it almost impossible to drop.

Some catches are overrated, particularly ones in which the ball bounces around and then falls into the receiver’s stomach. Fun play? Sure. But it’s a whatever catch.
On the other hand, the catches you’re describing are incredible and you’re full of shite if you think gloves are the deciding factor here. Hand size and strength are a vastly larger factor in the “crazy” one handed full arm extension catches people geek out over.

Do me a favor - make a video of yourself doing 3 "non-impressive" diving catches with gloves and post to show how easy it is

OP: “eh, I would’ve caught that back in my day if I had gloves”

Agree. But technology is part of the evolution of the game. I like to think about athletes from the past on how they would compete today with today’s technology and training. Take Jesse Owens for example. He competed on a cinder and dirt mixed track with heavy leather shoes in the rain. They were known to be uneven and slick. With that he ran a 10.3 100 and a 20 second 200. Let that sink in.

Lol that's not gonna happen bcuz my morbidly obese self can't do 1 pushup. 7 years ago I could've done your request no prob.

You probably couldn’t play catch with modern gloves on without dropping a couple of passes. Catching the ball involves a lot more than just the gloves lol

They used Stickum until it was outlawed in 1981.
All that brown stuff on Beletnikoff's socks is stickum.
Oddly enough, they started making tacky gloves in 1981. Imagine that. They rose in popularity and experienced a surge in the 90s when they began selling gloves for specific position groups.

Not surprised that you’re calling these guys overrated

Now you're putting words in my mouth sir. Quote on quote that isn't what I said.

Obviously today's gloves and type of football compared to decades ago helps.
It doesn't mean that's the main reason. But of course it helps. Today's athletes are more athletic obviously, but the credit of a great catch mainly goes to physical traits and timing and concentration

WRs absolutely wore gloves in the 80s and early 90s! Google pics of Jerry Rice in 1985 when he was a rookie and Michael Irvin in 1988.

Sure, we can pretend WRs and DBs throughout the history of football didn’t use gloves/Stickum/etc to help them out.
Jerry Rice freely admitted to illegally using Stickum throughout his career…
Today’s catches are awesome and need no asterisks.
