So FL will move to a consumption tax?

Finally a state will have a higher sales tax than Louisiana

Be careful, now.

a consumption tax
This is the only fair way.

Can you imagine the influx of people moving to Florida? No state income taxes and no property taxes.

Aren't all the good school systems funded with the local property tax?

I don't like the word "fair" but I'm all about a consumption tax, especially for a state with heavy tourism.

If a county/city can take something away from you for not continuing to pay tribute on that purchase, then you don't really own it in the first place.

exactly. this would only work if those that own their home-were maybe a certain retirement age- were exempt from property taxes.

or even only those with kids in school pay the school taxes.

That was my concern. How are the schools funded with no property tax. If a district can still be funded and not give up local control then no problem.

The bad school systems are as well. This is probably an over-simplification but in Florida the state FTE dollars pay for operating costs, property taxes build the new school buildings.

Clearly the current consumption taxes will have to be increased to make up the shortfall. I'm fine with that.

Seems like a consumption tax designed to raise the same funding that property tax raises is the solution.

My question about a consumption tax is mostly with merchants near a state border. A quick google shows Georgia has a 4% sales tax. I would assume some number of people can quickly jump to Georgia to purchase something for a slight tax break. This wouldn't be worth it on a case of beer or even a grocery cart of groceries, but larger purchases it would be worth it. I could see businesses close to the border not buying into a higher sales tax rate. Then there is the concern that people start paying attention to their budget and reducing their purchases and the taxation is less predictable.

Abbott and DeSantis seem to think alike. I personally believe Abbott mostly copies what Ron is doing, but whatever the case is, I'd love to eliminate property tax in Texas in exchange for a higher sales tax.

And they are all the people I don't want to live next to.

True story - Couldn't believe how crowded Orlando area was 2 years ago when visiting for a conference. After all it had only been around 12 years since we were routinely taking our daughters to Micky's house.

In those 12 years, Florida had gained more residents than the state I lived in.

The concern I have is control.

I am all for getting rid of property taxes. But I would want my school district to have a local source of funding - separate from the State. The more reliant on the State for funding, the more control the locals lose.
Not as bad as ceding control to the feds - but after Covid it is clear local districts need to have as close to total control as possible.

We have school choice here in Florida. Each of my three kids gets approximately 8k off of their private school tuition.

I’m doing a deep dive as to how this is all going to work.

I would be all for eliminating taxes on homesteaded properties. If you're buying up houses to rent out as Air bnb, frick em. Double goes for foreign owners.

You have that backwards as without property taxes you will for the first time in your life own the land beneath your feet. I would love for every state to move to a consumption only tax and remove all income and property taxes.
