The results of the game came out great, but I was losing my mind on our last two offensive possessions! I didn’t like the fact they they were playing not to lose instead of having that killer mentality! Set yourself up for a field goal in either of those possessions and the game is over 10 point lead. I’m not saying chum k the ball down the field, but this little quick screens or dumping it off to the backs was there all night. Anyone else feel that way?

It’s called trusting your defense.

1st game, inexperienced Oline, you're strangling the life out of them. I think it was correct in this situation.

I honestly don’t remember every play, but someone said LSU threw it around 7 times on the last 2 drives and one time a deep ball as well. I’m not sure how accurate that is. It felt pretty conservative at the time.

What do you think they did on the last two drives?

The 2nd to last drive was:
Run
Pass
Pass
Pass
Pass
Run
Pass

We ran a fake screen, 2man route on 1st down. Clemson didn’t bite so Nuss threw it to the decoy losing 7 yards on the play so we went conservative after that loss. It was a stupid call that put us in a bad spot.

One play went negative 7 yards

Nuss should have throw the ball away- but threw it behind the line so the WR had to catch it

that killed our drive to put the game away

I was really worried

because when we had the ball I said "This is the exact position Kelly has been talking about, we must impose our will and finish teams off when we have the lead"

we had to going then the negative play killled us, we punted and then they drove down like we've seen so many times- 4th and 5 from our 15 yard line that was scary as heck

we totally outplayed Clemson and darn near ended up in an overtime

Completely agree and it was painfully similar to our lost openers against FSU and USC. The difference was defense this year

2man route on 1st down

les miles type shite. you CAN run that but ONLY if you have such a punishing run game they have to load box with 8 or 9 then you can kill them with 1 and 2 man play action routes like we did in 2011.

It’s just unnecessary. You just threw it a bunch of times on the previous drive when you should’ve been melting clock and with under 3 to go you run that. It’s just not good.

I think Clemson's defense is legit. Also, we had turned the ball over twice already, and our own defense was shutting them down. Run the clock and keep doing what you're doing.

It's times like this that I really wish we had a seasoned OC. It was a bone-headed call. Sloan did call a few nice misdirection plays, but I severely disagree with the poster who called his play calling in this game a "masterclass." I'm cautiously optimistic, but let's see what he comes up with against Florida in two weeks.

Seems like you’d have a package for these situations especially with Kelly always harping on it.

Your assessment or memory is faulty. If anything we threw it too much.

2nd last possession was great until Nuss threw it 7 yards behind the line to Brown

Last possession was killed by holding call that brought us from midfield to inside our 20.

Our coaches went conservative & trusted our defense. Don’t hate it on the road week 1

Damned if you do damned if you don’t.

If they get aggressive and turn the ball over or don’t use much clock everyone is calling him an idiot for not being conservative

I agree. The 2019 team would never work the clock, just go down and score again. Kelly getting mad and slamming his fist about not putting teams away is exactly what we saw with the playcalling there. Maybe he needs to look in the mirror.

Stop with trying to work the clock with 9 minutes left, just go down and score

Alls well that ends well

but i would have preferred him take the points if he was going to end up going into grind clock mode.

But it wasn’t that type of play. It was a fake quick screen and the 2 blockers faked and went deep. We went for the kill shot after setting them up with the quick screen game all night long. Credit the Clemson corner for bailing out.

Again we had been setting it up all game. We hit like 6 or 7 quick screens. We went for the kill and Clemson just happened to bailing that corner out. It’s only a bad play call in your mind because it didn’t work. If you are trying to put the game away it was a great call. You had to think Clemsons corner would get aggressive knowing they have to stop us on the quick game after getting shredded by it all night.
