Lorne Michaels fought for Shane Gillis prior to Gillis being fired by SNL.

Damn, my respect-o-meter ticks way up for Lorne once again

LINK

quote:

Ultimately, the call to fire Gillis came from NBC, not Michaels, and he wasn't thrilled about the decision as he told the WSJ:

He said something stupid, but it got blown up into the end of the world. I was angry. I thought, ‘You haven’t seen what we’re going to do, and what I’m going to try to bring out in him, because I thought he was the real thing.'
Me too, Lorne

Also, on Maron, found out that Bowen Yang opposed the firing, too. Yang said he felt like the media and social media sites used his being asian as a bludgeon against Gillis. He said he talked to Gillis right after the firing and told him he had no problems with Shane.

Yang felt like he was being used as a mascot for cancel culture, and he opposed all that shite.

Lorne is like a lot of lefties who loved and live in the 90s era liberalism while failing to recognize how the 90s liberalism was never going to stick and was merely a precursor to the insane progressivism of today.

Lorne created the monster that led to that situation.

Seems like some of the biggest firings on SNL actually came from NBC execs instead of Lorne, like Norm Macdonald (all because some exec was best buddies with OJ and thought Norm was mocking him too much).

I mean, nothing against Colin Quinn (who followed Norm on Weekend Update), but in what universe is he funnier than Norm Macdonald?

One of the best books I’ve read in the last few years was the book on Lorne and SNL that came out earlier this year from his former assistant. He gave her his full blessing and she told everything

I learned so much and I was surprised how he is more left centered vs far left. John McCann was one of his best friends and he was a registered republican in NY for a long time and now is independent.

They tell many stories of the Leslie Jones and Cecily Strongs refusing to work when Trump hosted or when they wanted to do a Hillary sketch that made fun of her. He opened his door and said “this isn’t optional. You can’t bring your personal views to work and show favoritism. Funny is funny.” They eventually caved.

They are obviously a very left leaning show but l guess he’s gotten old enough where he picks his battles now since he’s so outnumbered

Everyone will identify with being more center than far-* when asked.

He's cleaning house right now. Expect no che and jost and an all new cast.

He's not retiring either

I do love that the biggest moment of Don Ohlmeyer‘s career was firing Norm for “not being funny.” Like Don would literally come down to the SNL writer’s room, tell Norm no OJ jokes tonight, and Norm would go “Alright, you got it boss!” And then as soon as Don walked out of the room Norm would go “Well I wasn’t going to do any OJ jokes tonight, but now all I can think about is OJ.” And then Norm would do like four OJ jokes that night.

But Norm got his revenge in roasting him back when he hosted SNL in the funniest opening monologue in SNL history:

Yet he was quiet as a mouse when everything went down. He could have spoken up at the time and said all of this and would have kept his job. Yeah, the LGBTQ community may have not liked it....so what. He's either full of shite or just a giant pussy.

Eh... This is just CYA media spin for Lorne because they fired the biggest star SNL would have had in a decade before he even started.

In saying that, Gillis likely doesn't have the success he currently has if he were in the SNL wheel of control and limitations.

He almost certainly doesn't have the Rogan connection and that launched him to Netflix, Bud Light ads, massive touring, movies and more.

At SNL, he'd probably still be a decent cast member lost in a sea of shite, and he Definatly wouldn't be a host-level celebrity.

Getting fired from SNL was actually the best thing that ever happened to him.

That was way overblown. They already announced the exits and it’s 4 people, 2 regulars and 2 spares. That’s usual offseason turnover.

Everything else is BAU. He said he tested for a new weekend update but thinks Che and Jost are staying. They are still head writers

He also fired a couple of women writers, who are likely partly responsible for writing some of the dumb shite they've been putting out. One was a non-binary person...shocking, I know.

Yeah you could see why it’s been so weak for a while now with that anniversary documentary they did. Some of those writers shouldn’t even be near some low level YouTube show.

I doubt anyone of any substance will be hired. Let's be honest, the best comedic talent doesnt need SNL anymore to get launched.

Hell, It can be argued the show actually hinders you now because you lose 3-5 yrs of your prime to the show when you could be building an audience through YouTube, podcasts, standup, etc., and jump the line.

The only thing SNL can really provide now is a pipeline to movie studios, but they also don't make film comedies any more, so it's not even that valuable today. Plus, movies are a dying artform.

Netflix is the only major outlet still producing comedy, but most of their $$ is pumped into standup specials, and a lot of the SNL cast members did not come up through standup, they come up through improv groups and acting.

I would agree

I would normally agree with all of this. But if Lorne was smart, he'd see the writing on the wall. The viewership is not good and late night variety shows, especially the talk shows, are not doing well. With Colbert being cancelled, and the possibility of others, and reports of all of NBC's late night lineup (including SNL) losing money, it's possible that he realizes that the show needs to pivot to what is actually working in comedy entertainment if he wants there to be a future for the show.

There are reports that SNL is looking at Kam Patterson from Kill Tony as a possible new cast member...which would be a pretty big departure from who they've been hiring.

Pleasantly surprised, if true. Yang has struck me as a little cancel culture bitch.

I completely disagree. SNL is its own thing and always has been. The ones who have been truly funny, all the time, and can also write have graduated to movies on their own merit.

SNL may be dying but it’s not because people don’t want or need to be on the show, it’s that they’ve brought on the wrong people both writers and cast

SNL is no longer fearless and hasn’t been for a while. That’s a requirement for a sketch comedy show
