State of the OL

The coaches see the OL each day and rep in practice thru spring and fall camp. The way Sloan and BL called the game on that side of the ball tells the tale on the state of the OL. Very much a work in progress with limited experience on a player and unit level with a real weakness at one of the guard spots. Can see that in the calls made (run on 3rd and 11 early) and the unconventional methods employed to generate a running game. Lots of bouquets thrown at the OL last night but the gameplan was the real reason Nuss only sacked once. Quick lateral/short throws (hence all the crying about not vertical throws). Formations and different player touches to run the ball. Plays that didn’t allow Nuss to hold the ball long. Sloan gets a ton of crap in here, and deservedly so in some cases, but last night he made an entire unit look so much better with the gameplan. No need guessing on the OL anymore…..just watch the coaches gameplan and play calls. As they gel and a better option at G emerges, the vertical game will return. JMO

3rd and 11 call was due to our thinking it was two down territory and if we could pick up 6-7 by running against a defense looking for pass we go for it on 4th.
I also think Sloan wanted to prevent Nuss from pushing to make a play early until he settled in.

Really happy for Mubinga. He got steamrolled at the end of last season and I wrote him off. He played much more, and better, than I ever would have expected.

Part of the different looks in the run game come from Alex Atkins. That’s a big part if his job here. If you watched his FSU teams, he used creativity in the run game even when he wasn’t scheming around a new OL trying to gell. I think we will see that all season, even as they improve over time.

Chester doesn’t need to be in a game all year

Only fear I have is injuries at this point

Chester played well in relief.

watching replay, Peter Woods has great hands for a big guy. he was off Thomason so fast on several plays.

Last year was horrible, but give the dude credit for last night. He came in for an injury and had to play left tackle for a series, and held it together.

Inevitability. You have to hope we avoid anything serious (4+ games) there or bad timing in a big game.
The playbook for the run game & west coast stuff is brilliant. They need to be able to pass protect though because teams will scout & Nuss isn’t very light on his feet.
Clemson D were no pushovers, so you gotta feel pretty good about the offense in general.

Think he played 4 downs his man was either chipped or he whiffed on each block

Chester got absolutely destroyed by TJ Parker the few plays he was in. We are lucky Nuss didn’t get hit.

I mean, he wasn't great
But consider- he's a not-good interior lineman who lost his starting job.
Because of an injury, we had to stick him at Left Tackle, against the #1 edge rusher in college, a guy projected as a top 5 pick in the draft, for 4 plays in a row.
And as you point out, Nuss didn't get hit. Hell, I think we even got a 1st down in that sequence.
Sounds like a win to me, I don't think you could realistically ask for more.

Not sure if you are happy or sad. But we keep getting these fantasy league super bowl coach evals on the players that really dont know squat. This may be the toughest DL they face this year and to come out slinging "oh buts" on five guys starting together for the first time is shite.
I am not calling them out as Joe Moore trophy winners but they won their side of the trench last night.

In a "loud and hostile" away environment for the first time this group hits the field together and there were no offensive line false start penalties. The 2 I counted were on receivers. That says a lot about the coaching, the preparation and the type of players we have on this OL.

Our OL was supposed to get demolished last night against this elite defensive front. They did not. After the first drive I told my wife that even if we lose this game I feel good about this year

He played out of position last year.
