Potential Gift Card Scam - Lowe's

Earlier in the year, my wife and I attempted to use three separate gift cards only to be told at the register that all had a zero balance. We knew this was false. We'd never used any of the three cards. LSS - we requested to speak with a manager, knowing we were being screwed. The manager returned from the back office, confirming that all three cards had the amount on the cards. We simply pushed the matter, knowing that if the cards had been used Lowe's would have an electronic record of the use.
We shop in HD and Lowe's all the time, therefore we don't care if we are refunded money or given a gift card to spend whenever.
How often does this happen? I think a majority of customers would assume they'd used the card and simply move on and likely discard the gift card itself.
FF to earlier this week. My wife and I attempted to use two gift cards. Both were initially reported as having a zero balance. We knew otherwise. One of the cards was subsequently proven as having the amount we idenitified. The other card, an assistant manager maintained had a zero balance. We again know this isn't true. After explaining our historical experience, an AM agreed to research and report back to us. We've not heard back yet.
This scenario played out across the entire USA, and all the gift cards would result in massive corporate theft.
We've discussed this experience with more than one cashier at Lowe's since the original incident. Several expressed the belief that this occurs fairly frequently.
If true, a class action should be filed.
Has anyone else experienced this?

I think I read about a scam like this on here recently. The scammer scans the cards in the store and as soon as you purchase them they spend the balance. Something like that.

Sounds like a possible inside job. Is that the only Lowe’s you’ve gone to with the cards?
Lowe’s and Home Depot use the same delivery subs. At least they did. My wife ordered a fridge from Lowe’s (with a wait) then days later ordered the same fridge Home Depot. She says she canceled the original Lowe’s order.
Anyway they delivered and installed the fridge with photo proof from Home Depot. Then weeks later said they delivered the 2nd fridge to the same address from Lowe’s. The kicker is they used the same proof photo from Home Depot and conveniently left off the serial number. I’m sure they resold the fridge.

It's been several years since I was involved in the payments side of things but gift card fraud is a huge business. Everything from hacking into online shopping accounts, return fraud and washing money are done via gift cards.
Chances of this being done by store employees is incredibly small

I’ve heard of people cashing out credit card points and them having zero balances when they are attempted to be used. Credit card company keeps saying they were loaded when they left. And result was they got gift cards with nothing on them and surrendered a ton of points to get them.
So be careful about getting cards with points.

My sister gave us a lowes card for christmas for 25 bucks. When we went to use is ~4 months after getting it the app said there was nothing on it. I asked my sister if she still had the receipt and she didn't. We didn't push the matter over 25 bucks. I didn't know this happened regularly. I guessed some Indian dude got lucky stealing it.

Something similar with Walmart. Ordered gift cards online, received them in the mail, and when trying to activate was told they weren't loaded. Called the Mastercard # on the back of the card and they said funds were never loaded on them. Called Walmart and the serial number on the card I had didn't match the serial # that they said I was sent. They refunded me and I just got a card in store. Fast forward about a year, and the same thing just happened to me again. Not sure if Walmart is incompetent (highly likely), employees are activating cards and then shipping out different ones, or what's going on, but I now just give cash instead of gift cards.

There are thieves who go around and steal re-usable gift cards from stores. Activate the stolen cards and put them back in a store. They get notified when you put money on the card and withdraw it immediately. They caught some here in Louisiana recently. Probably what’s happening with a lot of the folks who commented in this thread.

From my experience the problem is with the company that underwrites Lowe's gift cards. This company is cashstar. Look them up. Incredibly horrible reputation. They under right most GCs to major retailers. They are incredibly difficult to deal with. Dont expect them to address your problem.
I gave my SIL a GC they underwrote.
When he tried to use his GC it had a zero balance. The retailer said not our problem as CashStar is the one responsible. CashStar was like not our problem.
I had to get my CC company to reverse payment on the charge.

You not using them and the balance being zero doesn't mean it was false... because of the scam.
People put fake barcodes on those gift cards on the rack, or they spoof them in some way that they know when they get activated. Then they drain them. It's a long running scam. Don't buy gift cards from the rack. Electronic gift cards are fine.

Gift cards with points.
Even if the gift cards had the proper amounts on them, the people that do this are just lighting their points on fire anyway.

I hate gift cards
I’d rather someone make a donation to cancer society or American heart association etc

You make a good point. However, my experience was that we had three cards that the Lowe's management actually researched and determined the cards had money on them. This reality suggests that the issue is with Lowe's.

Yes it has happen twice, once at Wal Mart the other at Lowe's.
Both times I gave me wife a $50 gift card, at checkout they told her it had no money on it.
What happen was both times the total was for more than amount on gift card and the cashier didn't understand that. I just used both cards on line and picked the items up.

I have had this happen with a gift card for a restaurant. They typically nave an app where you can check online to see how much the balance on the card is. I returned a couple of weeks later and the card miraculously worked.
I don’t think there is any conspiracy to defraud us out of our money…rather just a cashier that didn’t know how to (or was too lazy to) process the transaction correctly.
