Home energy audit

I read in another post from a while back that a person called
for a home energy audit. The service provided was free, however, the poster said he had to wait about 6 months.
My electric bill was the highest it has ever been in nearly 17 years of living here. I imagine my home is not as efficient as I thought it was, or want it to be.
Private companies in the Baton Rouge area appear to be Mr. Green Jeans, DASolar, and On Call Electrical - at least this is what ChatGPT is stating.
Has anyone gone the private route, and if so, who did you use? Or is it worth waiting and getting in line for Entergy Solutions?

I called for an audit from Entergy around this time last year. They called me 2 weeks later saying someone would call me within 6 weeks to schedule the audit. That hasn’t happened yet.

Windows and sun exposure are usually number 1 culprits. I know I'm in Texas and you're not, but tinting any windows with sun exposure cut my bill by 40%. I already had a house full of blinds, too.

I have blackout shades throughout the majority of my home. However, I do have direct sun exposure over my half plantation shutters in my kitchen window, and I do have direct sun exposure for a transom piece of glass above my kitchen side door.
A light tint might be something that I will look into.

And I suspect this is the reason why private home energy audit companies exist. Thank you for sharing that tidbit - helps with my decision.

My son just had one. Think he waited 2 weeks for appt. They did a lot of caulking and discovered a couple things wrong with his duct work.
Suppose to be back this week to do some insulation.
No out of pocket. He seems pleased.
Located in Arkansas though.

I paid $900 for 12 windows (entire house) 5 of the windows were floor to ceiling. Worth every penny.

CLECO sent a third party contractor to do mine. They put the house under negative pressure and pointed out a lot of areas where conditioned air could escape. They ended up changing the weatherstripping on two of my four exterior doors - they wouldn't touch the garage door as it is a liability with vehicle emissions and they didn't want to touch my front entry door. They also applied spray foam around all of my a/c registers and replaced my attic stair tent. I can't complain because it was free but I was hoping to see a drastic reduction in my bill but that hasn't happened.

He did an energy audit for us right after we got done building to pick up on any potential problem areas. Wound up getting him to do some air sealing on can lights and add a bit of insulation. Really nice guy and knows his stuff.

Met a guy doing a local business. He came to house. The house was a two day job. He worked one day and then missed a few days before he came back and completed job. The finished product was great. I just don't feel comfortable vouching for the guy. With that said anybody that can tint a car can tint the windows in your house. We have a pool and wife did not want guest at pool to be able to see in house. Mission accomplished with no more glare inside and house stays cooler.

Baton Rouge - I went the private route and used Entergis Testing & Sealing LINK. They were recommended by a former work colleague. I had this done in 2021 before having a replacement HVAC installed. I had them do a blower door (house envelope leakage test) and a HVAC duct leakage test - same equipment is used for both tests. Each test was $300 & $350, respectively, if I recall correctly, and it did provide me the information I was looking for and needed to know.
I did check into Entergy’s program and as I recall they were not offering the free energy audit service in LA at that time, but were offering it in a couple other surrounding states - AR being one.
As stated by another poster, windows are a major source of summer heat gain and winter heat loss, depending on number, size and orientation. That information comes quite clear when conducting a manual J heat load calculation for properly sizing of a HVAC system.

I went thru Entergy solutions last year. A private company came about 4 months after I called. They did the following: installed weather strips on all outside doors including the laundry room door, installed an aluminum foil tent inside the attic door, cleaned all a/c vent covers, put foam sealant in all cabinets, attic & laundry room where pipes come thru and performed an air flow test to confirm that the house was sealed.
I couldn’t believe how much work they did. 2 guys were here about 2 hours.
All this for free. This is definitely worth it.
