Interview

This is brief and worth a listen. There’s a little talk about getting the approval for the exception to wear white jerseys at home, which is interesting after the topic earlier today.

More notable is how self-aware he is about his time here. He gets into that at the end. It’s interesting to hear his perspective and it’s a pretty honest one.

He was very good on the big ten network. I wished the sec network had gone after him

I met him in Grayton a few years ago. Really nice guy and I think always should be remembered fondly here despite the way things ended with him. He 100% helped lay the groundwork for what we have become.

I agree. He ultimately got too stubborn and couldn’t duplicate the success of the first staff. He also had a lot of recruits who pumped up our rankings, but either never made it to campus, or were kicked off the team.

But he still reminded everyone what this program could be and what Tiger Stadium always has been. After the early 90s, that was still a big turning point.

Man, just watching that highlight of LSU vs UF, it feels like it would have been so fun to be at LSU 1997-2007.

Just a different world back then. That 97 UF game is pure energy.

I graduated in 96. I got a taste of what that game was like in the Bring Back the Magic game when we beat Auburn. It was definitely rocking that night. I was in TGBFTL and my last two years were a blast finally getting to see some good football and big games.

I was in Tallahassee preparing to go to grad school the next year. I was working at a local music store there and got stuck working a drum clinic at the store the night of the UF game. I was NOT happy, because I just had a feeling we might jump up and bite them. My wife spent all night listening to the radio broadcast and relaying info to me. I kept seeing she getting excited outside and I knew it was happening. My coworkers thought it was hilarious. I was finally able to get away in time to hear the end of the 4th quarter.

I was able to watch the video later in the week and was amped, because my wife and I (we met at LSU) were going back to visit friends and go to the Ole Miss game the next weekend. They were on probation, so we were 100% going to pound the Rebels and have a blast.

We did have fun, but that was a terrible game. We played like shite and Ole Miss was ready for us. They won going away in the 4th quarter. One thing I remember about that game was Kevin Cooper, the punter for Ole Miss. He and I were in the same HS class at a private school in Memphis. He was a QB and Kicker, but had potential in college as a K with a big leg.

I knew he had walked on at Ole Miss when they were on probation, so there was room to make the team with scholarship reductions. I also knew he had started at K for a bit, but lost the job. But he ended up becoming a hell of a Punter. He kept us bottled up all fricking game. I remember saying “Hey! I know that guy” the first time. It wore off after he pinned us inside the 15 for the 3rd or 4th time.

Years later, we ended up working on the same project as PMs for contracting firms back in the Memphis area. I told him I was there that day on the LSU side. He said that was the best game of his career and we had a laugh over it. He was cool about it and didn’t talk any shite. He was really impressed with the atmosphere at the beginning of the game in Tiger Stadium.

Here's the "First Staff."

Gerry DiNardo - Head Coach

Morris Watts – Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks

Michael Haywood – Running backs

Bob McConnell – Wide receiver

Bill Elias Jr. – Tight ends

Hal Hunter – Offensive line

Carl Reese – Defensive coordinator/linebackers

Jerry Baldwin – Defensive ends

Mike Tolleson – Defensive tackles

Ron Case – Defensive backs

Bo Davis – Graduate assistant

DB Coach Ron Case left after the first season to be on Mack Brown's staff at North Carolina, then the "Kill Shot" after Year 2; DC/LB Coach Carl Reese departed to be on John Mackovic's staff at Texas. DiNardo then hired "That Guy" to replace Reese. I wont even type out his name. Here's a reminder.

25 years later Lou Tepper's drop linebacker is ubiquitous on college defenses. He was just ahead of his time.

Reese left after year 3 to be on Mack Brown’s first staff at Texas in ‘98

Tepper actually took over during bowl prep for the 97 Indy Bowl IIRC

The 97 Florida game is one of my Top 5 All-Time games in Tiger Stadium!

That was one of the greatest stretches for Tiger Stadium. I think 1997 - 2003 was probably the best out of those years because of how hungry LSU fans were for success back then.

To his credit, Dinardo signing Kevin Faulk transformed LSU football to relevance.

Is that really different from the Star position? #trailblazer.

Sitting in Notre Dame Stadium watching them complete a comeback against us by simply throwing the ball down the middle on every play was sickening. Tepper was horrible.

Joe Dean said numerous times, off the record, that GN was one of the most intelligent head coaches he'd ever seen. "But he was just not a people person & had ongoing problems with his staffs. He micromanaged every staff".

DiNardo was the coach my entire time as a student. I thought he was a good coach, but loyalty to Lou Tepper ended his time here. He did some good things though.

Those were some of the worst defenses I've ever seen under Tepper

DiNardo got a lot of shite here, some deserved but he is a high IQ guy that came out of an era of low IQ guys (Tommy Tuberville, Curly Hallman).

I've caught him a few times on Big Ten network and he is really good at breaking things down. He would be out of place at the current SEC Network which is unwatchable.

Gerry seemed like a likable guy. I dug his personality. He did himself in with bro loyalty. I was at that 49-7 (cigar game) debacle in TS. I think it was over then. I took the gold out poster from that gameday program and wrote “Will coach for food”.
I had lsu and Auburn fans handing me free beers nonstop after the game.
