Tyler Gray, the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources, is stepping down on Sept. 2, state officials announced Monday.

Deputy Secretary Dustin Davidson will take over as secretary. Stephen Swiber, the state's Chief Resilience Officer, will move from Landry's office to fill the deputy secretary position, the agency said in a memo to employees.

Prior to his appointment by Gov. Landry, Mr. Gray was the President of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association (LMOGA).

Correction Update: Mr. Gray worked for Placid Refining a between his stent at LMOGA and his appointment to LA DNR Secretary. Thank you, ForeverLSU.

Any speculation as to why the move and why right now? He's barely into his term.

I haven't the slightest idea. I'm guessing it'll be another person who has a good bit of their post-college career in the political/NGO/lobbying business, rather than someone who has spent a good bit of their professional career in the energy industry itself in some form or the other.

Would be cool if Gov. Landry went the route President Trump did, someone like a Chris Wright to head LA DNR and see how that works out.

None of these people have lasted under Landry. It’s been non stop shuffling. Probably because he’s a fricking moron.

Dustin is a great guy. I’m happy for him, assuming Landry doesn’t ruin the opportunity for him.

it was always assumed that he wouldn’t be with LDeNR long. Basically long enough to almost see the reorg through

Damn...you're right. I met him when he was LMOGA Prez, and that feels like just a year or two ago. Buy yeah, that was several years ago.

Time flying way too fast these days.

Is it normal for there to be this much turnover among high level appointed positions?

Seems like 3/4 of Landry's initial executive branch appointments have left or stepped down since 2024.

Update from KLFY. Their title and quote from Gov. Landry makes it seem like it was his decision to make the change at LA DNR and not Gray having something else come up, but who knows with the way media reports things these days.

quote:

Gov. Landry announces leadership changes for 2 Louisiana agencies

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Gov. Jeff Landry named new leaders for two Louisiana agencies, the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Department of Energy and Natural Resources (DENR).

“Louisiana is at a turning point, and these leaders will help us build a stronger future for our state. I have full confidence in this team to deliver for the people of Louisiana. From strengthening our infrastructure to securing our energy future, this leadership will help us grow our economy, create jobs, and protect our way of life,” Landry said.

He named Julia Fisher-Cormier as deputy secretary and Eric Dauphine as assistant secretary of project delivery at DOTD. Dauphine was named as deputy secretary in June to aid Secretary Glenn Ledet in creating the framework for the new Office of Project Delivery.

The new office aims to streamline projects, while the Office of Transformation, led by Fisher-Cormier, will oversee efficiency.

quote:

Legislation was passed during the regular session to restructure DENR. According to Landry’s office, Deputy Secretary Dustin Davidson will move into the role of secretary, and Chief Resilience Officer Stephen Swiber will serve as deputy secretary.

“Dustin has been invaluable in his service as deputy to the department, always ready to step in and move us forward. He will be an outstanding leader, and Stephen will bring the intellectual curiosity and professionalism needed to continue refining the work we’ve built together for Louisiana,” Secretary Tyler Gray said.
