33 years ago this morning, NWS Miami captured one of the most terrifying radar loops in U.S. History: the eyewall of a Category 5 Hurricane, slicing into a major city while leveling everything in its path.

It was a very small and very intense hurricane when it made landfall in Florida. This is Hurricane Floyd at the same spot and same intensity 7 years later.

Someone in my family (named Andrew) has a framed Miami Herald front page in his home office from the day before landfall with the huge headline of “Millions Flee Andrew’s Wrath”.

My grandmother had evacuated to our house in Donaldsonville. She was an old Pentecostal woman who thought the devil was found in everything, but especially alcohol. When the tree right in front of our house uprooted, my mom panicked and woke my dad up. She goes, “baby, this is so scary you gotta wake up! The power is out and the tree in front of the house just came down!”.

He sat straight up in bed and goes, “THE POWER’S OUT!?!! I GOTTA DRINK MY BEER THEN”.

My grandmother was disgusted

I remember going outside with my brothers and playing football when the eye passed over.

IIRC the storm whipped up the Atchafalaya and caused oxygen reduction and fish kill. Crawfish had plenty of rotting food and less predators. Prices were lowest I’ve ever remembered.

That was not a terrifying loop at all.

I was a recent college grad living in Metairie.

My grandparents and parents harassed me into packing up and evacuating to Baton Rouge.

Metairie was untouched. Baton Rouge got hammered.

That’s legit funny as hell. I’m appreciative of that type of humor

Hard to believe it has been that long ago. I was at LSU…we decided to stay there and have hurricane parties. That was a lot of fun…until it wasn’t.

We foolishly didn’t buy much of anything to prepare but a bunch of alcohol! Within a couple of days after the hurricane, we were tired of being hot, tired of drinking, and all of our food had spoiled. Those were the days before widespread generator use, so there was no power to the gas stations and no gasoline so we couldn’t leave.

That was a very valuable lesson!

Wild to think that was also the first named storm of the year.

Hit close to Morgan city and the eye went up Joey’s 90 and the right side of storm tore through every small town on 182 which ran parallel to 90. Then made a sharp right turn right before laffy and straight down 10 into the BR area.

Are you familiar with where the population of South Florida resides? Let me help you out. Take the entire population of metropolitan New Orleans, multiply it by 3 and then relocate it to Grand Isle. And instead of a hurricane hitting that area as a CAT 3 like Katrina, it get hits with a CAT 5 Like Andrew.

Andrew is responsible for the south Florida storm building codes that are now standard on the gulf coast.

I remember as a kid in NE Florida a few years earlier Hugo went past us and now this was going to the south of us. I remember I said to my dad “I wish it would hit here”, only so school would be closed! My dad looked at me and informed that was the dumbest thing I’ve ever said in my short life.. he went through Dora in 64!

It was my first semester at LSU and I was setup in some temporary dorms. I woke up the next morning after our hurricane party because the power was out and we were sleeping on vynil mattresses without sheets. It was Africa hot. I went outside and there was a lot of tree damage. I knew power wasn’t going to be restored anytime soon and classes had been canceled. I loaded up my gear and drove home. I didn’t know at the time that I had walked out during the eye. I thought the storm was over. What a terrible drive home on the middle of the interstate during the backside of that storm haha.
