spinoff thread: selling car to family member, dealership offering to facilitate the deal

Went to a dealership the other day to try and see what our options were. We would rather sell the car to a family member (who is buying for their child), use that as the down payment, finance the rest. Dealership said they could facilitate the sale between us and our family member.
How exactly would the dealership be benefitting from this transaction instead of doing a regular private sale? They jumped on this idea way too quick for my liking.

“In and outs” are pretty common.

Dealer fees and potentially getting the financing if they match whatever your family member is getting elsewhere. If yall don't feel like doing paperwork, it's maybe worth it to you

I mean, it is pretty simple to do a bill of sale for the vehicle and transfer title. Then take that money and put it towards your down payment.
Am I missing something here?

If you do it at the dealership you get that “credit” for your taxes. They want to sell you THIER vehicle. So whatever it takes to make a deal

If its a cash deal between you & your family, there's no point. If financing is involved, they can maybe help.

Other than a tax credit on the trade in for the OP. It’s a shift of the tax burden from OP to his family member contingent that the dealership doesn’t mark it up on the trade in value

Not no, hell no. Stealership will have some way to screw you on the deal. Don’t know what it is, but there will be something.

By doing this for you they are guaranteeing that you buy a vehicle from them.

No sales tax on a donation in Louisiana. Could save the 10% tax. If this is between family members just donate it. If the other party should wish to give a gift of money to the donor, the 2025 limit before any gift tax is reportable is $19,000.

It's cheaper to go to a local notary/tag place. They're all over the place in Baton Rouge.

Doc fee.
That's about it.
Unless your family member finances. Then they can try to finance and sell back end product.

Did this with a friend of mine years ago. They financed the same amount as the trade in they gave him.

Hope they don’t have any issues with the car.

You are buying a vehicle at their establishment instead of someone else's. Probably minimal to no profit, but they get your business on the other deal and you don't have to deal with the hassle

Is it somehow different in LA than MS? In MS you sign the back of the title as seller, they sign as buyer, they take it to the county, county gives them a title application receipt and a new tag. Boom Bam Done.
Let a dealer do it and they are going to charge you the title fees and probably some other fees.

Maybe they want to make a sale? In some states, you can't take the selling price of the old car off the new vehicle price to lower the sales tax unless it is all on the same purchase document. In these states, the only way to sell to a family member and get that amount put toward your sales tax would be to have the dealer be the broker.
The dealer is only going to send the car to auction and they probably dont want that hassle.

Why would you need a dealership to sell to a family member?

Absolutely correct, IF the trading vehicle is registered in the same state as the buying vehicle...

Incorrect take...
