I know Clemson has a great team. Some say they should be No. 1. But I almost choked on my corn dog when I read Clemson fans think they have better receivers than LSU. It ain’t true.

LSU has the best and deepest receiving corps in the nation and it’s not close. Aaron Anderson who led LSU in receptions in 2024 and was third in the SEC is back and so is Chris Hilton, who might have been the leading receiver if he hadn’t been hurt and missed 7 games.

Nic Anderson was Oklahoma’s leading receiver in 2023 but missed ’24 with an injury. He was replaced by Bauer Sharp who was the Sooners leading receiver last year. Both are now Tigers. So is Barian Brown, a first team All-SEC kick returner who averaged 30.3 yards per return. He also logged 1,528 career receiving yards and is the all-time leader in kickoff returns for
touchdowns (5).

Zavion Thomas is just as dangerous as a receiver as he is a running back. He averaged 14.3 yards every time he touched the ball. We also have speedy sophomore Kyle Parker just a sophomore with great hands.

But the fastest of them all is red shirt freshman Jelani Watkins, a sprinter on the LSU track team, who runs the 20- and 60-meters and has a blazing 6.63 speed in the 60.

6’7 tight end Trey’Dez Green doesn’t have Watkins speed, but he is an elite tight end with great hands and leaping ability. He caught 13 passes for 104 yards and 4 TDs as a freshman last year.

The receiver argument, imo, is splitting hairs. Both squads have some top level guys on the outside.

They’re not as deep, but I’m willing to admit their top 3 might be better than our top 3 this year.

#0 Antonio Williams is a 1st round guy

Kind of a silly argument bc we know LSU is WRU.

I’ve learned to just keep my mouth shut until after these types of games because it seems every time I’ve talked shite about the opposing teams position groups, those said position groups commence to whoop LSUs arse so I’m just going to keep it at Clemson has very good WRs that’ll be very tough to stop if Klubnik has time to throw.

Right. It’s not like LSUs WRs are going up against Clemson’s WRs.

It's going to be an awesome matchup. QB, RB, and WR are probably a push. LSu has better tight ends. Clemson has a more established O line. Clemson probably has a higher ceiling on their D Line relative to starters but LSU is also crazy talented and deeper. I'll take LSU's backers over Clemson's. I think LSU's secondary is better than Clemson and I really like LSU's special teams.

Overall, I think Clemson probably has more A+ potential players but LSU has a bunch of A- players and is deeper than Clemson overall. I wouldn't be shocked to see Clemson maybe getting the better of LSU to a degree in the first half but LSU's depth, especially defensively flipping that in the 2nd half.

How many snaps do you expect Watkins to get against Clemson? More than 0?

The more I think about it, the more I feel like LSU has a really good chance to win as long as they weather the early storm. Clemson is going to ride that home crowd and come out on fire you'd have to imagine. The more I look at it though, I really like how LSU matches up with the Clemson receivers and should it be tight in the 2nd half, I think LSU's depth will be the difference. Just have to not let the moment get away from you and allow that defense to wear down Clemson deep into the game.

This group of LSU WRs looks to have a lot of depth and diversity of skill, but I don't know if there is a first round pick in the group rising to the level of guys like Jefferson, Chase, Nabers, BTJ...or Smith at OSU or Williams at Alabama.

Clemson returns their 3 top WR from last year. LSU only returns one of their top 4 pass catchers (Anderson). Personally, I think Green can be a big weapon, and guys like Thomas, Hilton, N. Anderson, Parker, Brown COULD be great. But if you are just judging on production from last season that is where Clemson gets the nod.

No doubt. I do really like how LSU matches up in the secondary this year though too. You're getting a secondary full of proven veterans to counter the receivers of Clemson, even if their production wasn't at LSU last season. Cooley, Haulcy and Delane have all played a ton of football and you have guys like Stamps and Woodland back that have played a lot of football for you. That doesn't account either for the highest ceiling guy of them all in Pickett.

If you asked me who to take on WRs I'm taking LSU all day everyday. Clemson has some elite guys absolutely but there's no question LSU has more top end depth there.

When you're running 5 WR sets who's getting the ball when they're all WR1s and then you have TEs who might be scary too. I also think some teams are going to be absolutely overwhelmed by LSU's speed on offense. I don't think most people even on here realize how much speed LSU has across the board on offense. You're looking at elite 4.4+ guys everywhere at WR and even RB. Speed is killer and you're going to see it this year on LSU's offense.

Clemson does have 3 great WRs. No doubt about that.

What they don’t have is anything remotely close to our depth. We can go 6 guys deep with players who have 1 or more elite skills, and that’s just the guys we have a track record on. Then add in the TEs, especially Green, and you have an embarrassment of riches. We can go 5 wide or a 12 or 13 personnel and make the secondary sweat.

Think about this. We have some legit high ceiling young guys in Francis, Wright and Billiot who may struggle to get on the field in blowouts. Watkins has literal Olympic speed and we don’t know what his role will be. Hell, Destyn Hill looked good in camp according to 247 and On3.

Like Sampson last year, you never know who will pan out and who won’t. But it sure helps when you have 11 WRs with legit SEC talent on the roster. It doesn’t kill you if one or two hit the portal and someone doesn’t pan out when you have that many guys to play next man up with.

Hilton was a huge part of the offense once he got healthy. I don’t see how you can just ignore that. It opened up the offense finally having a legit deep threat at the end of the season. He’s been healthy thoughout camp unlike last year, so he should be included alongside Anderson. We know who and what he is.

Brown is a weapon. Everyone has seen that in camp. He put up great stats as a true freshman at UK in the one season he played with a decent QB in a functional offense. He was pretty good last year considering how much was stacked against him. And he’s done it all vs SEC competition.
